Is it a permanent unlock or does it need unlocking each game?

I assume that it needs unlocking each new game as the mage place needs to be unlocked for each non-mage player as well.

You need to save the merchant each time. I just failed on a new character. Shop isn't open.
Edit: You can move the merchant around a bit before the thieves attack by walking into him. This might help you keep him safe.

Good catch Jaorin. Now I just need to play a character that can survive long enough to get the random encounter and live through it again... I wonder if I can push him behind me into that bottom right room...

I really want the merchant quest to have a minimum level requirement. I just hate moving characters to a different starting zone and finding the trap door before they get there. It's a "attempt and probably fail/die or miss it completely" case more often than not. Maybe a minimum of level 3 or 5?
