Strange things...

#1 Post by kzwix »

Well, I can't say I'm a "good" 'band player, never finished any variant, but I've still a good experience on the subject, especially with low level characters (as I tend to often play low level ^^)

Well, as far as I can tell, ToME 4 is freaking difficult. I mean, I've been killed by a cute bunny (with a berserker) doing a whopping 47 damage, on level 1 (I didn't notice it's damage level until hit for the 3rd time, when I died ridiculously, without having killed anything). And, YES, I had affected points and skills using 'G' (I'm quite experienced with ToME 2.x, too).

Another example here : I tried a hobbit rogue, shadowblade. Nice, raised it to third level without much problem, then, I met another skeleton warrior. I had managed to kill a skeleton mage, before (damn nasty beast), and lots of degenerate skeletons, so I wasn't too worried about it. I attacked it once, with nearly full HP, but... just have a look at the screenshot :

Image

You should notice it dealt more damage than my maximum life, in one freaking blow... I was only on dungeon level 2, with a level 3 character. I feel quite... distressed.

So, first question : Is it intentional that monsters do such damage (this looked like a critical hit), thus more or less putting the player at risk, even against a lowly rat (or bunny), without any real way of "playing it safe" ?

Another thing : I noticed some monsters walked right through closed doors (rats, especially), but you cannot attack them while on the closed door, instead, you'll open the door. Is that intentional ?

Other questions : Is there a "Menu" key ? An "Options" key ? An "Help" key ? Couldn't find any of these...

Oh, and the naming of a character really should be put back at the END of the creation process. I mean, when you don't know yet what you'll play, you can't give a proper name. So, instead of naming your @, and selecting after this a race and class for this badass, why not let the player select race/class first, then name the great adventurer after what he really is ?

Thanks in advance for your time, and your answers.

Crits are reduced in next beta.
But it looks like you did not get crit instead just a very very bad roll from a skeleton who might have been really lucky and had a mithril sword :)
As for the rabbit, that's shoob bad joke ;>

You can have a game menu simply by pressing escape :)

Reduced crits ? I sure hope I'll be able to level without dying this fast, then :)

Is it possible to check for the weapons wielded by the monsters, so as to flee-with-godlike-speed if I encounter a skeleton with a mithril longsword ? In fact, I snooped around the forums, and it seems I'm definitely not the only one having died to such things (lv10 berserkers do, too ^^).

I'll keep testing !

"Skeleton warrior uses Stunning Blow. ... hits for 170.97". I'm not sure what the multiplier is for Stunning Blow, but if it's 1.7, then this seems to be pretty much in line with a whole lot of skeleton warrior results I've been seeing. The ones with two-handed swords very often seem to do about 100 damage.
who might have been really lucky and had a mithril sword :)
You could have the game tell us what weapon the monster is using. Please.

And... doesn't it require about 60 strength to equip one of those? Does this monster have 60 strength? Hmmm? Does it?

Not 60 but a lot yes.
But monsters "cheat", they autolevel their stats as needed ;)
It's cool to be a monster isnt it ? ;>

It's rare and it's not completly cheating: the stat points they use there are not available to do their normal leveling
