activating items

#1 Post by Miruko »

hi, i don't know if is a bug or is intended, but activating an item's spell make you lose a turn te moment you click, then you have to spend another turn to target and fire, leading to death sometimes, i think it could be fair if the turn is spent only after targeting.

I don't think that a turn is spent after targeting, unless the behaviour changed recently. As for it costing a turn before the action is taken, that's been around for quite a while.

i mean that a battle phase is like

-being hitted
-activate the item with, let's say, disengage, this make you pass your turn
-being hitted
-select the target and jump away, pass the turn

Right, but lukep is saying it goes more like this.

-being hitted
-activate disengage item
-monsters go you get hit again
-select target and jump away
-shoot your bow or whatever
-being hitted

In other words the issue isn't that you're spending two actions. It's that you're spending the action on disengage before the targeting takes place. Once the targeting happens you go again (because the energy isn't getting spent twice, it's just disconnected).

You bring up disengage.... I had a character die due to trying to use that talent from an item :( So yeah, will this ever be fixed? I though there were technical reasons this could be a very difficult issue to resolve?

Just to make sure it's very clear, item activation does not cause you to lose a turn. What it does is make the turn order go oddly -- instead of moving first in a turn, like you normally do, you move last. It's still the same turn, you're just acting later in it. This has been an issue since item activation was implemented.

Also, very minor, but the past tense of hit is hit, not hitted. I hit someone yesterday, I'm going to hit someone tomorrow, I am in the process of hitting someone, that person is being hit.

Actually, on a slightly related note, it would be nice if items that require targeting but also have a power pool don't consume the power if you cancel out of the targeting. On several occasions I've tried to use, for example, the rod of annulment, only to cancel out because my target was offset from me slightly, so I didn't quite have direct LoS (or the nature of its targeting wouldn't allow me to select an empty square behind my intended target) and I would still have to wait for its power to fully recharge before using it again.

This is akin to consuming bar resources (mana, stamina, hate, vim, whatever) when you select an ability to use, not when you actually use the ability, but maybe it is intended for item usage.

In that same vein I tried to use a staff of ruination on the wierding beast and got frozen mid cast which sucked. It forced me to target myself or cancel the effect.

That has happened to me so many times with staves of ruination. It's the only thing about them that isn't awesome. My archmages keep hitting themselves with it when I don't notice they've been frozen.
