Storming the City

#1 Post by Sradac »

After several failed attempts to make it to the bottom of the sandwurm lair, I've decided to try for the storming the city instead. What level could an archmage expect to safely make it through storming the city? Would another class have an easier time with storming the city?

Oh, Guess i should note I had absoutely no problem with the air elementals in derth, flameshock + fireflash + corrosive vapour makes quick work of them at level 13.

The boss can cast Freeze, and has other icy attacks that can also freeze you. There are also boulder-throwing giants, and confusion-casting giants. And wall-eating acid-spraying X monsters. It's a pretty nasty place.

There's two ways to handle the quest. You can attempt to assassinate the leader, or attempt to clear some/all of the level. if you want to assassinate the leader, you need to have a lot of detect, and some fairly reliable assassination techniques (ie, transport to him quickly, stunlock/freezelock him, and then kill him before he recovers). Assassination techniques are a bit risky regardless. If you want to clear the level to get to him - well, you're probably ready to think about doing that when you can grind through Daikara without real risk.

Also, I'm thinking this should be in spoilers.

I realized that after posting so I went back and edited the original points that would be considered spoily and was hoping for just general "Try at level 20" or something like that.

Your experience level is really not a good indicator of how well you'll do. "It's just like Daikara but with a harder boss" is an apt description. Can you handle Daikara? Can you handle it if you throw in a mage casting lightning + ice spells? Then you've got a chance.

It's more about your defenses, your ability to deal damage, your defenses, your HP, and your defenses.

Isnt it a bout about your defenses too ?;)

I usually do the second part of the quest after Old Forest, Maze, Sandworm Lair and Daikara which means around character level 18-20. It can be done earlier with good equipment, inscriptions, talent selections and tactics. But then something like this may happen...

I did the quest, but was unable to find the exit from Urkis tower/level. Used Rod of Recall at he end. I've digged with pickax and even found caved-in room, but no exit. Was I supposed to dig harder? I also have that jewel which supposed to do mapping, but forgot to use it. BTW the quest itself was walk in the park after daikara for Cursed. After clearing first room I've caught sight of Urkis behind the walls, blindsided to him and killed. After that cleared the rest of the level. Cursed are great for sandworms too - I've littered the lair with corpses of my Arcane Blades, but Cursed passed through as knife through the butter.

The rod of recall is the only exit (unless you're a Mage). In beta 15 and earlier, the rod of recall was dropped by Urkis, and was the primary reason to fight him. In beta 16, now that the rod drops elsewhere, it's ... a bit anticlimactic.

(And a potential deadlock, if you didn't get the rod before going in.)

Hmm, little bit illogical. Better solution would be like in "trapped" quest, or have RoR as prerequisite.

I would like it if the game checked if you had the RoR prior to entering dlvl 2 of the tempest zone - if you do not have it, Urkis drops it, if you do, no changes to the current set up.
