15b: I understand you want this to be *hard*, but...

#1 Post by thalen »

...don't you think having monsters randomly appear on the first level of the dungeon where you start who are powerful enough to kill you in a single hit is a bit much?

I (as Thalore shadowblade) saw an orc soldier. I turned on shadow combat, waited until he was next to me, activated 'wrath of the eternals', used dual strike on him, and stunned him. Everything went along fine, he was down to 20% of hp, when he recovered from the stun. I hit him again, didn't kill him, and then he uses Sunder Armor, gets a critical hit, and does 148 points of damage.

I'm not sure that a game where the lesson is, 'death is literally unavoidable' or 'when you see a monster that worries you, you should scum the level until he's not there any more' sounds like my favorite kind.

Keep in mind this is still in beta stage. Also, this was certainly a very rare event - you got quite unlucky. On top of that there may have been ways to deal with it, for instance by running a little until your stun ability came off cooldown.

Still, I agree there shouldn't be ways for enemies to kill in one hit like that on the first level. This is probably due to the game cheating to let an enemy use a high metal weapon - both a ridiculous thing to allow in early levels, and a fault with the item spawning in my opinion.

I had a poor elf, came out of Trollshaws and went straight to the Old Forest - in he went, skipping along merrily as elves do, and - Fire Wyrm. I don't think he'll be back in wherever-Middle-Earth-became for quite a while, because the Wyrm heard "Oh" and he was sitting on a chair in whoever-Mandos-became's office by the time "feck it" arrived. I've a theory that DG's hidden away some little earwax-flavoured easter egg for OF1, since another guest appearance there was a Naga Tide Huntress - much the same result.

Agreed, the RNG definitely not in your favour!

Those fire wyrms are having fun lately. I too met one, mine in amon sul. If I'd had good sense I would have run farther and faster.

I met a lvl 35 greater demon of some kind in the old forest. I was a skeleton archer, and I had a shield rune. That combined with my phase door and a cleared level, meant i actually managed to beat him :D .

I met my death at the hands (fins?) of a naga myrmidon in the Old Forest once or twice in older versions. Yesterday I met some horrors on Old Forest level 6, but I was able to get away thanks to Jumpgate.

Overall, the appearance of completely unfair out-of-depth monsters is quite a bit less now than it used to be, which is a good thing.
