Mouse Play

#1 Post by itastelikelove »

I recently started playing with just the mouse, because I can do it one-handed, it's easier to target spaces, and I'm less likely to accidentally press wrong buttons. And I like it! But it's not 100% fully functional, and I feel like pretty much everyone else is playing only on keyboards. So I thought I'd point out things other people might be missing!

Here are the ones i can think of right now. I'll add more when I find/remember them.

1) Run targeting - normally you can click wherever and your little guy will take whatever he seems to think is the most appropriate route, avoiding obstacles, stopping when appropriate, etc. And if there are monster in sight, you only move one Space at a time. Nice! But when you can see monsters, you lose the ability to navigate objects and corners. You have to click somewhere in LOS, and sometimes you'll STILL get hung up on corners, banging your head against the wall as your enemies get closer and closer.

2) Exiting Menus - In the character creation directions, it says you can right-click to cancel your last selection and return to the previous page. Doesn't work there, or anywhere else. Much more annoying are the full-screen pages, like the Quest log, where you can't just click outside the box to make it go away.

3) Uncommon menus - I can't find any way to get to some of the menus, like 't'ake-off, 'd'rop, or 'u'se.

4) Drop-down menu placement - Sometimes the menu of options you get when right-clicking a space drops past the bottom of the screen, and you can't get to the last couple options.

5) Keybind selection - The 1-12 keybinds that show up in the dashboard area are still quite useful, especially for AOE attacks. It would be nice to be able to right-click in the talent menu and then select 1-12. Or right-click in the keybind area of the dashboard and select a talent.

6) Tooltips - Sometimes the monster's stats get in the way of the monster. Could the window be made to switch sides if it would cover the mouse?

7) Shops - There's no way to adjust the number of items you want to buy or sell. maybe a set of +/- or ^/v buttons?

That's all for now!

Good comments thanks!
I'll try to work on that.

As for exiting dialogs, it is not obviously (unless you did the tutorial where it is clearly explained ;> ) but you can close even fullscreen dialogs by clicking their titlebar

If you put a little 'x' in the corner of the title bar then people might find out.

I'm glad someone other than me gets annoyed by how mouse navigation suddenly changes when monsters are in sight. It's infuriating at times, dangerous at others. Whilst I can somewhat understand the logic behind it, I also think it's very confusing to have two different forms of movement like this.

Okay, that's good to know. I like Grey's suggestion with the 'x'.

Also:

8) Nature's Touch - Right-click talent selection only gives this as an option for enemies/allies, not for the player.

9) Slime Spit - Right-click talent selection only gives this as an option when clicking on the player, not enemies. Makes me even LESS likely to use it.

10) Map Scrolling - A tip o' the hat to Grey, and to make the list more complete.

11) Examining Objects - A lot of the time, the tooltips with names of items or terrain features when you hover with the mouse don't pop up like they're supposed to. And most of them travel off the end of the screen, so you can't read more than the first word.

12) More Auto-run - When you are first in a new area (i notice this especially in towns), your character will sometimes stop running for no reason (actually , i guess i haven't looked at the dialog to see whether there is a reason or not...but i don't think it says). Maybe they think it's dangerous to run in unfamiliar territory or something?

I've experienced the same. If you explore in a dungeon, auto-run stops, when you enter former hidden/black areas (without giving a reason in the console). When you enter a town for the first time, you get to see the full map, but auto-run behaves as if the map were still unknown, and stops whenever you enter an area never in LOS before. Again, no reason in console.

Update: tried clicking on the title bars of various dialog boxes, and they wouldn't close!
