More frequent beta releases or thread for compiled versions?

#1 Post by Mithril »

There seems to be massive changes in the versions you can compile yourself recently. So much that there almost seems to be two different groups of user discussing the game. So maybe there could be more frequent beta releases? Or maybe a thread for posting compiled versions on free filesharing hosts such as Mediafire or Megaupload, if there is an interest in that by those who compile themselves?

The releases aren't just about compiled versions. They're also about "the crazy idea seems to work reasonably well" and fixing all of the blatant and obvious bugs (like not being able to play if you hadn't unlocked anything).

That having been said, there *have* been some pretty significant changes since the last one. What's on the docket between now and the next beta release?

It might seem a lot of time between release becasue of the number of stuff changing between them, but really it's only ever 2 or 3 weeks :)

Better idea: players learn to be more patient! :-P

DarkGod already releases at a breakneck pace, utterly unprecedented amongst roguelike devs. He's only going to release when he feels he has a polished enough game for us to play. On top of that the number of new things he adds with each release is overwhelming. Beta 14 promises to be an especially big leap forward. If you want to play a buggy svn then I think there are guides on the forums. Until then... well, surely you can enjoy playing b13 some more ;-)

Personally I find it hard to play enough between releases to get a char far in the game. By the time I die in the east a new version is out already!

I perfectly agree with you. However I had a lot of trouble learning how to properly compile in Windows and the repository data is in somewhere obscure part of the forum. Maybe a sticky on what SVN and beta testing is and a "Compiling ToME4 from SVN for dummies" would be welcome on the forums.

To clarify - I'm personally astounded and gratified by the rate of change and improvement in this game. I wasn't meaning to complain at all. I really had just wanted to get a basic idea of when the next might be expected.

i've been holding off playing for the last week or so cuz i don't want to play another game mired in the old setting (and im too lazy and incompetent to compile the SVN!)

Wow. I just thrust both hands in the air and grinned like a loon (and would have made noise except that am currently in a non-noise-friendly location). I knew I was going to be stoked, but I didn't realize I was going to be *this* stoked.
