Annoying problem when defocusing the Tome4 window

This often happens when in Bree, having 3-4 other programs running at the same time as Tome4 (WinXP). When I defocus the window to open another window (IE8 for example), wait a bit, then focus the Tome4 window again, I find it frozen and nothing can be done except killing the process... very annoying when you saved your game a long time before...

Experiencing the same thing on XP, as well, though not limited to just Bree. One quirk I did notice is that keypresses seem to still be being read; if you're not in the menu when you unfocus, ferex, when you come back you can hit esc->g to save the game, which kicks the program back into functioning... sometimes. Generally have to kill the prog and restart, though.

I've noticed the same behaviour on WinXP too.

I'm trying to duplicate it now, but some different things are actually occurring. Sometimes when I switch tasks then come back to Tome4 many of the keyboard keys are disabled, but not quite all. I can still use the 'g' key to pick up items off the floor and the 'l' key to look, but the arrow keys no longer work, or any other useful keys (like escape or ctrl+x). The mouse still works to hover over monsters and to run to a location. Switching back and forth sometimes fixes this.

Beta 3/2/1?

Beta 1 had an issue when minimized. Then DG made a change that probably didn't fix it, but made it negligible. I think the way it worked (and probably still works) is for every X ticks the PC had allocated more memory, but now when the game doesn't have focus the game is paused, so there shouldn't be any ticks. But I guess the underlying issue that caused the memory to be allocated might still be around.

Beta 3 on WinXP.

Just had the same thing happen as Frumple - the screen would not repaint but I think pressing keys / clicking around would still do things. I think I died, because the music stopped playing and my save game was deleted. Then I clicked around the region where I expected the "Exit" button to be and the screen closed with GDB reporting that the program exited normally.

Seems to be something to do with the screen refresh / tick.

Seen that on Vista too. I figure Tome4 is a jealous god and doesn't like being second place, ever.

By the way, for anyone else who has this problem, I have found that one can save with ctrl-s in these situations when no other key combination works. Then even if you have to kill the program, at least you've saved recently!

I have the same issue with Windows 7 in ToME4 beta 4. Most of the time only the keyboard stops working but sometimes the game freezes completely.

Okay, far as I know, this is related to the alt+tab thing.

If you alt+tab, the game never registered that you lifted alt. Which means that when you switch back to the game, it thinks that alt is still pressed. alt+key isn't mapped, so thats why keyboard input fails, and somehow it also much with mouse.

The fix is easy. Press alt. Everything will work again then.

Any plan to fix this? It's horribly annoying to have to minimize the window before switching to another program and then restore the window to play again. Any window on top of the Tome4 window will irremediably hang the process...

I have disabled the code that suspends TE4 while unfocuses until I find the real problem

Any progress on this issue in general? At some point between the last time I played (b3 or 4, iirc) and now, the problem seems to have gotten worse -- I can't even minimize the screen without ToME going into terminal lockdown, much less go to another window for a few seconds. Having to either save and exit to change songs or kill the program via task manager and restart after doing so is troubling

What's the log output when you switch back to tome ? does it says anything ?
