Nice new things

#1 Post by Grey »

With a new release it's easy to concentrate on picking out the bugs and flaws. I figured it would be nice to have athread where instead we praise all the cool new features. Some things I like in b12b:

-Full characteristics of each race displayed makes it much easier to choose between them. Previously some stuff was a bit of a mystery.
-Tooltips are really handy, especially since I'm still unfamiliar with a lot of things
-Scrollbars make the game much much more playable with the mouse, and make inventory management in general a lot better
-I'm playing a roguelike which gives me the option to disable antialiasing, framebuffers and shaders. - awesome :D
-Game feels smoother and faster in general.

Hmm, and more to come as I play more. Looking forward to finding wands and other new items.

BELTS! I was quite amazed at finding a 'slotted'belt I could put items in to use them quicker 8) .

Also, the new interface is certainly faster, although it will take a while to get used to :) And being able to see racial stats during char creation helps significantly.

Seeing your own ideas implemented in the game. It's probably the coolest thing about TOME right now. :D

Agreed there, though I'd like to see more of them :P

The red mist affect at low HP is brilliant - saving my life one hit at a time. Previously I had trouble keeping an eye on my HP counter, and wouldn't heal till too late.

I don't think I've seen the red mist bit. Though all the new bars and highlights in the menus are very nice. The overall speed including saving/loading (finally!) is quite fast again. It's very enjoyable to just start up for a quick play and not get dragged into waiting for 10 minutes waiting for it to shut down. I'm also very glad that we have a full list of items to wear!

The reddening of the corners is only available for GFX cards supporting FBOs & shaders. If you dont get the screen burred when confused or the new invisibility effect then you wont get that either.

I can't believe I forgot this fundamental nice thing about the current beta. It shows two things. One is that there is still a load of developmental space. And the second is, THE GAME ISN'T EVEN DONE YET AND IT'S THIS GOOD! I mean, seriously, we ARE still in beta and the game is THIS complete.

Yeah, it's amazingly complete, with more polish than any other RL, a huge variety of content and playstyles, and most importantly it's incredibly fun to play. This, sir, is awesome shit.

I totally agree. My obsessions with ADOM and Tome2 pale in comparison to this.

Eh...I'd say it is indeed getting there promptly. By my reckoning, "lopsided" as the circumstances might be, aside from the Heft Wars versus the older established Roguelikes in the PC space---I see no reason to not be in lively competition in terms of the visual and ease of use realms that the various Console/Handheld Roguelikes within the Fushigi Dungeon franchise and beyond occupy.

Even for just content outright, I'm rather sure there's still MUCH more to be wrought even if it has come a long way indeed from Beta1. Strong hunch.

So, a rising star, no question, but exactly what the historical implications of ToME 4/T-Engine 4 wind up becoming is still very much up in the air.

Thank you, the work that Dark God, Shoob and I did is just a foundation! So I hope you will all continue to contribute and make it something really special!

Don't forget you can also create your own module for others to play in!
Regards

Jon.
