i think sources of stun resistance need to be made a little more common. most characters in vanilla have free action by ~DL20-25. i think most characters should have, say, 20-50% stun resist by the time the reach tol falas.
there needs to be a couple weapon ego types, as well as boot and glove ego types that add to stun resistance. are there already rings that give some stun resist? i can't remember.
a potion or scroll that grants some temporary stun resistance could even be considered.
stuns should be deadly of course - but even with 50% resist they still are (heck, even with 99% resist, they still are...).

A potion of free action maybe?

Grants three turns of stun, pin, and daze immunity plus one turn per 30 magic?

As Edge pointed out, you can learn how long stun gives you. With normal trolls, you get three actions, so the pattern is: Stun, hit, hit, hit, back, back, repeat. Provided you hit with each stun, and you have room to retreat, you can kill a troll without taking a single hit.

With Bill, I'm pretty sure it's the same, except you only get two free swings after your stun. So again, _if_ you connect with the stun and he doesn't resist, and you've cleared space to retreat into, then it's easy.

With any non-melee class, you're better off not getting into melee range at all. Never face Bill without scrolls of phase door :-)

For the other bosses...

You can, I think, make your life slightly easier if you go visit all the dungeons early in the game. Just enter and then exit. As I understand it, the level range for the dungeon is set based on your character level when you first enter (with dungeon-specific minima and maxima). So if you visit a dungeon early, the boss will ultimately be generated at the easiest end of its possible level range.

But, yeah, it would be nice if cold resistance provided a bonus to resisting freeze..

Don't follow repton's advise, this will only get the mechanism nerfed by the evil maintainer !!! (speakin of entering zones early, not stunning)

On the other hand that means you're fighting your way through the whole dungeon without getting exp. Which kind of sucks.

I had something like that happening to me through chance when i visited CD early in hopes of finding some decent dagger, gave up after a short time and on my regular trip back in later ran into a big giant/drake pit. Was still quite a bit of work and zero reward.

The stuff dropped is worse too. I'd say that such abuse punishes itself. I remember back when someone found that skeleton PCs could enter the first level of tol falas safely to get stuff or whatever. I did that at level one and sold the stuff. When I finally got a character to tol falas and was a little disgusted to notice that level one of tol falas had much crappier stuff on the ground than it should have considering my level ...

/kiss!

Also, I'll note that the big challenge of the early game is beating the Master, right? I mean, its not like the hard part is slogging through all of the random monsters in his tower and once you get to him, he's a pushover. Nope. Sure, the various monsters can cause trouble (though they're not a death trap the way other dungeons can be) but the serious obstacle is the Master himself.

Anyone who intentionally weakens the random monsters found in Tol Falas or the Elven Ruins or even the mid-tier dungeons is making a bad trade. In exchange for reducing the difficulty of the relatively easy, near term challenge you're weakening (by reducing the loot and xp rewards you get) your character thus making the much more difficult, longer term challenge harder.

That having been said, if people start finding ways to trivialize the Master (such as directed teleporting your summons to him while remaining well out of line of sight), then I could see this becoming a problem.
