Stealth & Invis

#1 Post by darkgod »

In next beta (probably not today sorry, was busy this weekend :/ )
* stealth/invis now prevents the monsters from targetting you
* light makes it obvious where you are even if stealth/invis is active
* stealth disables light automatically (invis does NOT)
* a warning pops up if a monster targets you while stealthed or invis
* monsters now have lite(does not show)/infravision/..., if you are invisible/stealthed they will check if they can see you(random roll) AND if you are within their lite/infravision/... radius

Also players will get Heightened Senses as the second cunnning/survival talent, which allows to see without light in a certain radius.

Will that also fix the NPC Stealth? If you have the Shift+T on then you can see where stealthed creatures are.

Does the level of your "stealth" talent increase the strength of your stealth, or does it really just decrease the range at which enemies must be in order to activate it without HiPS?

[edit] "probably not today sorry"

Since this thread got bumped by our friendly spammer two posts above I got curious about this myself and started a rogue.

As far as I can tell SerPounce, stealth strength increases with cunning score. Going from 1 point to 5 points in the stealth talent didn't seem to reduce how often I'd get spotted (again as far as I can tell). It wasn't until I started dumping every level up into cunning that my stealth seemed to really improve (though I still get spotted pretty often).

There could be other factors at work though like level difference between the character and the mob. This was all Old Forest leveling and it wasn't until around level 10 that my stealth seemed to keep me hidden more then 50% of the time. On the other hand, I spent the first four levels in the Trollshaws and had a stealth of three and the base cunning for the character and again hadn't noticed any difference between having a stealth of one.

Maybe the forest zones have to much light for stealth to be super effective.

I've been playing a rogue recently and actually dug into the Lua code to figure out the exact mechanics. An creature has a chance to see you proportional on its level and cunning, and you have a defense against that proportional to your stealth level. You only see the "Fox has seen you!" message when it initially targets you, but you are actually still stealthy and the fox has to re-find you every turn. If it fails to see you again it only knows approximately where you are and may even move away from you. This is highly important because it means that you still have a chance to use shadowstrike when attacking a creature that has already "seen" you.

EDIT: I have not checked the influence of light, yet. About to do that...

Whops, I didn't mean to feed the thread necromancy troll! Sorry about that, I didn't see the date differences.

Anyway, so yufra you're saying that PC cunning doesn't play into the equation contrary to edge's (and my) casual observations? and that Stealth talent level does impact it?

Sorry, I left out the cunning on the side of the player. The actual formula for the hide defense is 4 + (cunning * talent level / 10).

Nice thanks! definitely very nice to know. So for a real stealth character you probably want to max every one of the stealth skills.

I see. So even though I'd invested quite a bit into the talent it wasn't until I started raising my cunning that I really saw the effects of that investment.

Thanks yufra!

Yeah, I can completely see how that could happen. With an X*Y mechanic: you raise X, nothing happens -guess it's not that- then raise Y, and wow big change! Funny how such a simple mechanic can be tricky when testing. I've got to learn how to read this "code" stuff people keep talking about ;)
