I tried ToME 2.xx ages ago, but was quickly totally baffled and gave up fairly quickly, especially due to the lack of help. ToME seems to have a whole lot of interesting features, so it was sort of a bummer that, to me, it made absolutely no sense half the time - and I've never had trouble understanding a roguelike before, except maybe Incursion.. and Dwarf Fortress (if that counts), and I figured both of those eventually. ToME 4 seems like it's a lot more polished, so I want to give it a go - the problem is there still seems to be a baffling lack of newbie help, though so far the game seems far more user-friendly than before. Is there any guides or something that have been written or are being written? I think it would be very helpful as far as getting new players into what seems to be the most complicated Roguelike out there.
One little things, too - Did they remove all of the races and classes? I recall there being oodles of both, and now I can only make a human, dwarf, elf, or hobbit that's a warrior, archer, or rogue - I've always been a fan of 'spellcastery' or exotic classes, so this is sort of a bummer.. are they being re-developed, or something..?

yeah, right now t4 is in beta so there isnt a whole lot of documentation, but there are people here (like me) who know t4 pretty well so we can help. If you have a question just ask it
Right now t4 is just on the 4th beta, which is pretty early and new content is being added all the time, including classes and races.
However, unlike previous versions of tome, t4 makes it so that you have to unlock certain classes/races before you can play them, and mages are a part of this. (if you want you can play a quasi-mage (arcane blade) at the start, but keep in mind they do not regenerate mana like a normal mage.
so have fun playing and try different stuff, and dont be afraid to ask/provide input on what you think of certain things as this game is in a state of flux.
there probably will be a more definite guide a few betas down the road, but right now there still is balancing issues that need to be resolved first.

Thanks for info.
As far as Arcane Blades go:
How do they regenerate mana? Only through mana potions?

Yes, that is right! The only other time they regenerate mana is on levelling up.Wolpertinger wrote:Thanks for info.

dont forget arcane feed too
they can convert stamina (which they do regen) to mana, thru this talent, I think you need to be level 8 first.

Tome 2 actually had pretty good documentation, in my opinion. It was just a big game.
T4 isn't documented much yet, but as has been said before, feel free to ask around here and people will help you out.
With regards to arcane blades, there are also rings of mana regeneration that can be used to skip the problem (or there were in beta 3, I haven't gotten much into beta 4 yet, but I assume it's still the case).

Re: Is there help for newbies anywhere?
I do think Tome4 would be very well suited to a tutorial mode like Dungeon Crawl has. If you aren't familiar, DCSS has a tutorial mode for a limited set of characters. The game plays as normal, except that messages appear when certain events occur, providing strategic suggestions, command information, etc. The tutorial ends when the char reaches a certain CL, although in ToME it could last through the first dungeon. Obviously content needs to come first, but maybe something to think about for the future.
