Amon S?l and the skeletons of newbie-slaughtering

#1 Post by greycat »

Just because I don't think people really believe me when I talk about the skeletons who hit for over 100 damage on the first level of the first dungeon, here's an entire game:

Code: Select all

$ grep '\[LOG\]' /tmp/foo
[LOG]	#LIGHT_GREEN#Accepted quest 'Of trolls and damp caves'! #WHITE#(Press CTRL+Q to see the quest log)
[LOG]	Today is the 1st Yestarë of the 122th year of the Fourth Age of Middle-earth.
[LOG]	The time is 00:01.
[LOG]	There is an item here: #B4B4B4#potion#LAST#
[LOG]	Mofo picks up: #B4B4B4#potion#LAST#.
[LOG]	There is an item here: #FFFFFF#potion of cure poison#LAST#
[LOG]	Mofo picks up: #FFFFFF#potion of cure poison#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits giant brown rat for #aaaaaa#17.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits giant brown rat for #aaaaaa#17.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo killed giant brown rat!
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits giant rabbit for #aaaaaa#20.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits giant rabbit for #aaaaaa#19.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo killed giant rabbit!
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits giant grey rat for #aaaaaa#16.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits giant grey rat for #aaaaaa#20.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo killed giant grey rat!
[LOG]	Mofo uses Ammo Creation.
[LOG]	You create some ammo: 190 iron shot (8.5-10.2 dam, 1 apr)
[LOG]	Mofo wears: #FFFFFF#190 iron shot (8.5-10.2 dam, 1 apr)#LAST#.
[LOG]	A bolt of ice blasts onto Mofo!
[LOG]	Ice trap hits Mofo for #BLUE#5.00 cold damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits degenerated skeleton warrior for #aaaaaa#14.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Mofo shoots!
[LOG]	Mofo hits degenerated skeleton warrior for #aaaaaa#14.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Degenerated skeleton warrior hits Mofo for #aaaaaa#111.00 physical damage#LAST#.
[LOG]	Degenerated skeleton warrior killed Mofo!
Maybe it was this:

Code: Select all

Equipment resolver for degenerated skeleton warrior
Equipment resolver degenerated skeleton warrior weapon greatsword
Filtering weapon greatsword
Filtering weapon greatsword
Filtering weapon greatsword
Filtering weapon greatsword
Filtering weapon greatsword
Filtering weapon greatsword
Zone made us an equipment according to filter! galvorn greatsword
I have no way of telling.

Yep that was unlucky. But in beta3, the only character which should even explore Amon Sul rather than escaping immediately is a mage for the nice staff at the bottom. It's too much unavoidable instant death for even archers/slingers. Much less anything else. 80-100 damage in one round is routine in there (if you actually see the orange 's' you won't see it for long  ).

The traps are also more powerful there for me at least. I go to Trollshaws and the most I get hit by a trap is like 35 damage. I went to Amon Sul and got burned by a 63 damage fire trap that burned for 42 damage each turn until I died. I could've used some potions to counter the burn, but I didn't even notice until it was too late.

Thirded or fourthed; if we're talking balance, these skellies haven't got it!

I don't know the letter of the law, but I think think this thread is just a little spoiled.

Not sure if I will ever manage to kill that thing in AS, but having an idea of what I will get and given the market for goods, I might try something new...

How do we determine where general ends and spoil begins?

I read lord dimwit's guide to T2 and while it made the game more fun in many ways, but I thought I would try to resist spoilers for this new game.

I don't think there would be a huge issue moving this to spoilers, but if you play Amon Sul (and you *start* there, so that at least is not a spoil), describing the NON-boss monsters in a dungeon is pretty low on the spoil list. But if you don't want spoiled at all, discussion during beta testing isn't a good place to look....

So you recommend leaving immediately? Is that some kind of joke? This makes the game very unforgiving to anybody who isn't used to roguelikes. They'll never get past the first few levels. Heck, I've only played 3 characters and I can't survive level 2, and I've been rogueing for years. I figured I would "get the hang of this new game" but you seem to be saying it's impossible. Is that what the developers want?? to make it near impossible?? (rant rant rant, sorry)

No, it's not some kind of joke. It's MUCH easier to survive for most characters in either Trollshaws (northeast after you exit) or, even though it's a "higher level area," the Old Forest to the southwest. There has been considerable discussion that characters should start in one of these dungeons instead, and I think DG indicated that might happen in beta4.

Having said that, I often do clear out the 1st level before leaving to visit Bree if I'm playing a missile launch character. [Note: You will eventually have to deal with these kinds of enemies, but not for a long while.]

Also, in the older ToME games, there was a newbie guide you get at the outset. Since this is still early-ish beta, that's probably not a priority especially until balance issues are resolved.

amon sul isnt that bad really, you just have to know how to take on the boss...

but this is not spoilers so I cant really give much away, but a few things to remember:

magic has a longer range than bows/slings.
stunning stuns.
Oliphant am I, and I never lie.
