Character Generation

#1 Post by forkbomb »

A few things from ToME character generation (and other modern *bands):

1) Ability to start over character generation at any time (in most *bands this is shift-S)

2) One of my favorite things about 2.x character generation was the ability to do a "quick start" (restarting with the same character after death - stats, social class, etc.)

3) Random race/class/gender chooser for the lazy or indecisive

Semi-related:
4) Ability to rename character after starting a game? Maybe you can do this already but I can't locate how...

3) ah well if everybody asks for it I'll add it ;)
4) not yet, not sure it is needed, is it really ?
[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD

I'm not at a machine where I can roll up a test character right now, but if I recall I wasn't able to do so after I got to stat and ability-purchase screens.

Perhaps not for all players. I'm a bit... indecisive. It's a nice option for when you realize your character is "rolled up" perfectly but you misspelled the name or something.

Ok ;)

And yes stats/talents are not part of the character birth, as soon as the map displays it means your character exists you could cancel the stat/talent screens without assigning any points and the game would not care, whereas you cant skip your class/race

The quick start is particularly necessary considering how hard the game is! :D

This would be really nice, or else to assign the name after the race and class. I typically move around those menus trying to decide what to play next, and then it's too late to give the new character an appropriate name.

A small thing, but would there be a way to display the class description when we get to the stat point allocation screen? When I'm trying a new class, my short term memory fails to hold on to the hints (e.g. "typically uses Strength and Cunning") info from the previous screen. Seems like there would be room for a third column in the pop-up, or alternatively, display the important parts of the previous screen in the message window below the pop-up.

Wilders.... I can't seem to get them to function well for me. I know they need Cunning (Stat 20 I think) to start to have more than one beast summonable at a time, as well as Willpower to be able to increase their power... but there doesn't seem to be a good race to play as them. Along with that, Cunning and Willpower aren't really good 'survival' stats on their own... Any suggestions on how to play them?

I think we should be able to decide whether our characters have facial hair or not.

I've found that Hobbits and Dúnadan are both decent. Getting Cunning up to 20 should be a high priority, so you can pin dangerous things with a Spider (or distract with a Turtle) while letting a Fire Imp plink away at them from a distance.

Beyond that, I've not had great success with them yet. I suspect it may be wise to raise Dexterity, acquire the shooting talent (spoilerish), and give them a ranged weapon as a fallback, but I haven't had a chance to really pursue that yet.

1) Seems buggy for me sometimes. It works mostly.
2) is awesome.

Also, when you've only got 1 of a certain class unlocked. (For me it was the summoner in the wilder section) it skips the second screen. This would've been fine, but I didn't know anything about this class at that point. Seeing that screen telling me 'focus on willpower + cunning' would've helped. Guess it's not a huge priority, but for people who are new, it'd be nice.
