Mage/Sorceror Armour+ Rod tips + Companions

I intend to just come back to this thread now if I have any other sorc questions, whilst categorizing multiple questions is good for searching I dont want to be percieved as spamming.

Anyway getting on great with the sorceror, I know what books I need to get but one thing I am very unsure about is armour, for example is it cloth armou I need? Its just I have never seen any? Or can mages wear leather or cord armour without penalties?

I also picked up some rod tips and got some message that I had to join them? Are rod tips like parts that make up some wand and is it the case that you somehow have to attach them before you can use them? I'm at a loss with regards to usage in this area.

I started using the stect monsters spell but unfortunatly you cant target any of these monsters so sometimes you are fighting many close range, one thing I did figure out was that globe of light is an excellent AOE for times when swamped with mobs.

Finally I went so far down the barrows and I got some companion and he/she follows me everywhere, I cant even remember what the initial message was but will I have this companion for the rest of the game and do I need to level him/her up or equip them?

out Lord Dimwit's strategy guide available

I have read the macrofaq.txt but Im wandering if theres a macro tutorial geared towards sorcs and how to macro with inscriptions.

I should mention that I have got my macros running sweet but Ive just learned them from little bits of info here and there on the web. (Im curious to see how to refine my macros and get macros for potion use etc)

Finally :) I know how to zap certain rods but I am unsure of how to use the staff of reveal ways since I cant wield it nor zap it?

My current major problem is that I cant find the exit on level 10 down in the barrows to get to lvl 11? Im now level 21 and I cannot find a way to get to lvl 11 and Ive been looking for 3 hours! I also used scroll of magic mapping and I even have a ring of flying and some artifact I cant figure out what it does since I cant identify it even with spell(Its called Kekes wormhole generator

Very fun but being stuck trying to find an exit on one lvl is a tad frustrating

I added numbering to your post to keep things organized. My preference would be for you to ask individual questions in separate topics. That will help us regenerate the useful question and answer format that got hosed by the hack.

1) Sorcerors can wear any kind of body armor. They take a hit on mana if the total amount is too great. I think this is governed by their Combat skill, but most of the time it isn't too important. If you find a randart plate mail with four immunities, wear it. There is one type of armor that does really badly affect spell casting, but you get a message when you put it on.

2) Zap a rod tip to attach it to a rod. You probably have seen some wooden rods lying around in the BD; better ones show up later. Then zap the rod to get the effect.

3) That is why I try to carry Noxious Cloud.

4) You helped an adventurer (referred to as Fumblefingers or FF on this site) reclaim his sword. You had a choice of having him follow you or getting another reward- you should have taken the other reward. He will follow you until he gets killed (probably not long).

5) Lord Dimwit's guide is over on the wiki in Spoilers.

6) If level 10 was a FF quest level, there are no stairs down. You are at the end of the BD, and your options are to climb back out or use Word of Recall. Always carry a stack of scrolls, a rod, or the spellbook (once you can cast it).

really appreciate the reply and with what you said I just checked the wight cave quest spoilers and I kinda assumed I needed to go down barrow downs until I saw wights but now I realise it must be that lvl to the left of barrow downs called quest level

This is the furthest I have been in the game though and now that I have ring of invis I am going to complete the farmers quest and head to the orc caves.

In hindsight individual posts would have been much better for future easy reference.

Im just wandering how long I would have looked for an exit had you not replied :D

Ok so just checked the wiki for the mushroom quest so things were going well, I thought :) I adorned the invis ring and picked the mushrooms ; well over 14, anyway when I got back with them to the farmer and press Y he says "You still have 14 mushrooms to bring back"

How do I solve this?

Typical solved it right after posting! , anyways to offer items(shrooms) to the farmer you should press lower case 'y' then direction, also if you have a large stack of mushrooms of the same type you can just press 'n' to repeat the last command

By the way I looted a cursed anulet of lightning resist and Im wearing a ing of fire resist, heres thing thing Im wandering if I wear the cursed amulet then use a scroll of uncurse if I will manage to grind those mountain dragon things as just checking my options out after barrows, Im even considering going into the maze

Certainly, I will do this now , except I will reformat it all, give me 20 mins :)

Im assuming single thread ? What I will do is put the subject something like Sorceror and General Newbie Tips?

N.B this is going to take a bit longer than expected its just Im trying to make it a bit more presentable if its going to be used as a reference :) Dont worry though all of your folks answers are going in there and hopefully this will help get some info back on the forums

Hey Xandor,

I resposted the said thread in a begginer FAQ section in one of the forums, its the thread where you say you want people to submit questions in QA format. If theres anything you want removed or if you want it cut down in some way let me no, kinda been busy with Uni outwith TOME so hopefully Ive posted it in the right place this time hehe, third time lucky and all that :)

Hopefully it will be some use and Im sure theres lots more stuff will get added as time goes by.

Im slacking on tome tonight again after doing my work, anyway you know how you mentioned to always carry a noxous cloud ? (Actually that doesnt sound right the way I just said that; maybe its just me :D ) [EDIT: Just found a nox book after posting!]Well is that the actual name of the spellbook or is it just a wand of noxious cloud? Its just I cant fior the life of me find a spellbook which contains that spell and Im lvl 25 now. (Im going t just buy a wand until I figure the spell book out)

Ive been to the bottom of the orc caves now I think so Im wandering whether I should do the first god quest or do the maze since maze danger lvl is 25

Im planning to see what some of the higher lvl stuff is like and get a bit more experience after which I shall hopefully be in a postion to add more stuff into the newbie intro sorc guide that everyones contributed to

I also a bit concerned that I am still using begginer cantrips for offense, currently in the shop I see spellbook of confuse and drain, Im thinking of getting confuse

The most lethal offensive spell is Manathrust, and it doesn't matter whether you are casting it from the beginner's book or the Mana tome.

You need some area spells to wipe out crowds. Noxious Cloud (the spell, not the wand) is the best general purpose spell for this purpose at low levels. Fireflash is better at high levels.
