Things that make you go Aaaargh!

#1 Post by Sir Crashalot »

Ungrateful cow..

After a hard fight I rescued the fair damsel and as a reward she gave me a pair of boots. Lovely boots too, they gave Black Breath and carried an Ancient Foul Curse.

I had a full inventory and decided to drop down a level then recall out to sell or store the gear I collected.

So I went down, read the recall scroll and decided to have a nap while waiting.
My nap was disturbed by a rather rude Dark Elf Priest who had come into range and decided to start flinging spells at me.
I thought "I'm not having that" and started to move towards him with the intent of slicing him a new one.
I took one step, hit a trap of scatter items and the recall kicked in.

:x

Oh yeah, and buying 10 scrolls of Magic Mapping and using them all in the attempt to get one princess quest to spawn properly, but I guess we all get that one.

What about you fellas?

There was a CSV fix by sigsegv - kind of an unnofficial 2.3.6 version - which fixes that issue among others. Its the one I play with. When I get home I can upload it to mediafire or somewhere (have done this before - but the link URL was lost with the rest of the forums - kind of like your scatter items story)

Edit: Found the link for the compiled windows version

That used to happen too much to me, ever since I carry a bunch of trap-dectection scrolls, and sometimes not even a word-of-recall.

With my current (now L33) possessor and excessive spellcasting for attack, being kicked out of an ancient gold dragon body in the Lothlorien tainted water quest - lucky I was at the edges and had taken out some vile eyes so I could tiptoe around out of range.

Then being kicked out of my mature gold dragon body just as recall kicked in on a level, and losing two artifact rings, blue DSM and a very cool or artifact cloak. In Lothlorien, having to settle for an agent of the black market body for the moment, which was positively pathetic.

Currently in a basilisk body for the speed, fighting Gorlim on DL33 in Mirkwood. Poison does nothing to him of course, though the speed from moving "quickly" is probably saving my life. No decent attacks from me, great stuff from him - so I'm healing and recalling more often than a decent adventurer should.

Killing everything that moves in the Helcaraxe, and then entering the Galleon withouth expecting it. It happened the first place I visited that dungeon.

The one thing that springs to mind is the time - the one and only time, I might add - I found Sting in Mirkwood (character level ~30). That made me extremely happy!

The problem? A couple of dungeons later I ran smack into Saruman and, Sting ot no Sting, there was no way I was going to survive that encounter. And I didn't. :x

My recent run with a Possessor. Everything was going swimmingly and I'd just snatched the ultimate Weaponmaster/Antimagic body, namely Ingeborg's (Theme). Picked it up, recalled... only to realize that I'd just recalled to the surface, not a town. Didn't really have enough food for wilderness travel at about -20 speed and I didn't want to drop the body. Lots of teleports in the wilderness trying to make it... Didn't make it.

All because I didn't have enough food.

In general, ToME has too many bugs.
  • May 2006, I decided to try some game named 'ToME'. I started the game and it crashed. I needed to write my own bug fix, BugReport615, to prevent the crash. I am lucky to know some C language, otherwise I would never be able to play the game.
  • I hear that Windows users always edit their lib/pref/font-win.prf to work around a bug.
  • I hear some rumour that Runecraft is broken. The rumour might be true or false.
  • I read traps.c, about the trapping ability and monster traps, and notice that wand traps and staff traps do no damage because someone disabled the code!
  • The macro recorder always makes a bad macro. I use the roguelike keyset, so I press 'S' to start and stop my macros. Every new macro has an extra 'S' at the end, so I must edit each macro to remove the last 'S'. (I forgot to report this bug.)
One of my worst mistakes in gameplay is in The DitL of Edaymar. In chapter 3 I write, 'Edaymar buys 7 Flasks of oil, and 1 Scroll of Word of Recall. She now has totally 10 oil flasks, but only 1 recall scroll, because she cannot afford another recall scroll. I hope to go deeper into the Barrow-downs, with enough oil to fuel the latern, and to use the recall scroll to escape.' But at the end of chapter 3, I write, 'Edaymar finally steps back from the wall, and tries to read her recall scroll, but there is no recall scroll in her pack. I discover from the message log, that Edaymar offered to buy the recall scroll, but forgot to actually buy the recall scroll.' Chapter 4 explains the failure to escape the Barrow-downs and the death of Edaymar.

You read The DitL of Edaymar to know the details of death from forgetting a recall scroll.
