Previous polls have already established that not everyone uses floor inscriptions, but still, a fair number of us do. So:
Have you ever figured out a floor inscription by yourself? By that I mean: You found a scroll, figured out which words to use, and successfully used the inscription, all without referring to any game help or spoiler.
Have you succeeded? If you tried but didn't, would a basic idea of 'inscribe a few of these words and see what happens' have helped?
If you have any specific comments, please share them. Thanks.
Floor inscriptions: Ever figure them out on your own?

IMO the forums interface is utterly friendly for polls, at least until ou can come up with a "post" and "vote" macro.
As for myself, well I wrote them, so it's har dto "figure them out"

[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD

I read the spoilers in the help files when I was new to the game. So I never figured them out, not sure that I would have anyway.
I always thought it would be neat if there were two or more possible inscriptions for each parchment. The one that would be recognized by the game would be randomly chosen at the start of the game.

Whups! You got me.Neil wrote:Next time point people to the wiki for the poll.
Yes, it's my turn to remind you!

Guest, that's a neat idea. And I think I might've tried Elbereth once or twice, myself.
I'm still waiting to see if ISNorden does anything neato with Norse runes.

Yes yes, we know you love the forum, DG. You don't have to participate on the wiki if you don't want to.
But it's pointless to ask on the forum to settle a pending issue on the wiki. If they're going to be two separate user bases, the poll is invalid. If they're the same user base, there's no point in splitting the discussion over two sites.

It's not a wiki issue; it's a ToME issue, and one I was merely attempting to gather more data on, and it's not an earth-shattering issue at that...it's just floor inscriptions, fer Pete's sake. :)
Given the current lack of postings on General Discussion there (which I'm sure will change -- and by the way, please go there and look and read and post! ), and given that that I wanted at least a little feedback from general users without waiting for ages, I thought this was a reasonable place to put the poll. The user base on the wiki is (AFAICT) mostly developers and oldtimers right now, though I think that will change given time, patience, and advertising.
If more users were actively posting on the wiki, I would have placed it there in the first place. If you prefer, I'll shift the poll to the wiki, along with detailed instructions on how to vote, and replace this thread with a link to that location. This was merely my attempt to sidestep the unavoidable growing pains on an issue that really isn't all that important.
I happen to like the forum myself, but I'm also quite excited about the wiki and I'm looking forward to a general upswing in its usage and a decline here. I've just put a link to the wiki in my sig, and I encourage others to do similarly.
OTOH: Darkgod, yes, polls are easy here (and I love the convenience), but they are also easy on the wiki once you know how to do them. So we just have to educate folks on how to create them. I'll now go work on a FAQ post over there.
