Publicity is needed for TomeNET
Publicity is needed for TomeNET
I think TomNET is a fantastic game. Not only is it great fun but there is great potential to improve the engine. If there were more people playing the game I think that would be good to enhance both of these factors.
Moltor mentioned the game was publicized on Slashdot.org at least once. I think more publicity like this is needed. If you have a web site and want to publicize or at least link to the TomeNET home page that would be appreciated. Also please tell gaming news sites about the existence of TomeNET in an informative way. Tell them something informative about the game better than "It's cool!"
It's free.
It's fast paced.
It's multiplayer.
It's a great RPG engine that has been evolving for over fifteen years!
It has a huge world to explore with Dungeons/Towns/wilderness/etc..
It doesn't require an expensive computer to say the least.
It has several classes and races to play so it offers variety.
It takes months to master yet you can enjoy it the first day.
If you can program, you can improve the game yourself!
You can run your own server if you like.
State of the art graphics. Well okay maybe not.
It's the kind of game that you can play for two minutes or ten hours at a time.
What else?!! Bone

Re: Publicity is needed for TomeNET
I did that twice. Last time was http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=89788&cid=7755830 which was modded up to the maximum (+5, interesting) (this is important if you want anybody to read about your slashdot comment). The first time I posted on /. about ToME, it was the Story itself! See http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/18/1622249 . At that time, the t-o-m-e.net was pseudo-slashdotted!Bone wrote:Moltor mentioned the game was publicized on Slashdot.org at least once.

You're point is right Bone. ToME (and TomeNET) is not a game for everyone, but many whom would be happy players know zip about its existence.
Hopefully, some of the community helps with the programming, other helps in making ToME knowned to the world

I'll be away all summer, but I'm convinced the release of v.3.0.0 of ToME is worthed a new visit on /. stories

Is there, somewhere, a general description of the differences between ToME and TomeNET (aside from the fact that one's multiplayer and the other isn't?)
Here's a case of my own frustrated potential new-user interest:
1) I've heard of it (ONLY because I play ToME.)
2) I've heard it's different from ToME (aside from the multiuser aspect) but I don't know how or why I should want to try it.
3) I have no idea where to download it, as the downloads page on this site does not mention it. If it were readily findable/available, I would have tried it already.
Items 1 and 2 only apply to some people who already play ToME and read the ToME fora here.
Idea: Expand interest in the already-large 'regular' ToME base might be one way to start.
Idea: Tell us where to download it!
Idea: Dump more TomeNET characters to oook.
Idea: Discuss TomeNET more frequently on r.g.r.a. (To be honest, I have no idea how often it gets discussed there; I used to read it regularly but haven't in quite some time.)

3) Go to www.tomenet.net (the first link google shows when you search for tomenet..), or
go to www.t-o-m-e.net and click on 'Switch to Tomenet' in the upper left corner, then click on 'download'.
Too hard to find? o_O

The guide explains where/how you can get the source code of the client. (www.c-blue.de/rogue/TomeNET-Guide.txt)
Yeah, I think it truly deserves more publicity. For just RPGs, I have Morrowind + expansions, Gothic 2, Neverwinter Nights + expansions, Dungeon Siege + expansion, Sacred, Bloodlines, and Diablo II + expansion on my computer. I've got most good games like HL2.
And you know what I'm playing right now?
