Demographic survey!

#1 Post by darkgod »

The recent poll about character sex made me wonder the % of female players(playeresses ? :)

So ...
[tome] joylove: You can't just release an expansion like one would release a Kraken XD
--
[tome] phantomfrettchen: your ability not to tease anyone is simply stunning ;)

If the demographic is anything similar to MUD players, it'll be males in the majority, but not by as much as you might expect. In a poll I did for Aardwolf, about a third of players were (or claimed to be) female. This bore little relation to the genders of their characters, which had about an 80/20% split in favor of males. That might be different in ToME, where female characters are less likely to get hit on by male players ;)

[Edit: Yeah. Guy here, also ;)]

I'm a guy. Hehe.....

I don't know why that is, but somehow it works.
And it was such a good idea...

Hm... well, MUSHes may be different than MUDs in that respect. In the MUSHes I worked on, females (or at least those claiming to be female) were very nearly even with the males, if not more common.

Female.

Yeah, that's been my experience, too. I think the combat side of things must appeal to the male adolescent ;)

Playeress? That's a word I haven't heard before, but I suppose I am one :)

I'm also a playeress of MUDs, tabletop RPGs, and stuff like The Sims, Neverwinter Nights, and Diablo II. In those I usually play females. In tabletop RPGs, I've played many female PCs, but only two males, and one of those males actually started out female (wands of wonder suck). When you're actually roleplaying, things like gender changing curses and traps and whatnot actually Do make a significant difference in gameplay.

Well I'm glad to see that the scales are evening out genderwise in games. Now that more women are being incarcerated for violent crimes in North America, soon little boys *and* girls here will be harangued by their parents for playing too many video games!

Male here

Hmm, just wondering if an age poll would also be interesting.

I'm female and always thought that the 'ity' end would give it away, but it doesn't most of the time, as I always get mistaken for a guy online, probably because I'm interested in traditional 'guy stuff' more than I am in traditional 'girl stuff.' Given the results of the poll above so far, I'd say ToME would be among the 'guy stuff' on my lists of interests. :P

you may be mistaken because in the english language -ity is non-gender specific unlike in some other languages (although they ending is not -ity in those languages, but translates to it)!

I didn't guess you were female, Furiosity. The word 'furiosity' is a noun, and English is (almost) genderless.

I didn't know that about '-ity', Serin. Interesting!
