Think of it!

"The Beaked Axe of Almost-As-Good-As-Anguirrel!"
"The Pike of Could-Maybe-Be-Mistaken-For-Glamdring-In-A-Bad-Light"
"The Mace 'Not-Quite-Ringil-But-Be-Grateful-For-What-You've-Got'"

See... together we can make it work...

:)
LMAO

That's not exactly what I had in mind.

As you can see from the poll numbers, there are many who would prefer new weapons for non-swordmasters. These don't have to be sentient, they don't even have to be artifacts. It's just that the simple fact of there are more swords than hafted, polearms, and axes almost combined!

That's the only thing I'm trying to get accross. It would be nice for a little more variety in the weapons.
And it was such a good idea...

No, it wouldn't be nicer, I say. More variety would just dilute the pool too much.

Fewer weapons, not more, is my plan.

And good job too, I say.

The codebase from previous versions has some awful padding.

I mean, TULWARS? Katanas? BOOMERANGS?

The rebalancing of weapons once it IS reduced is something that requires thought, not just replicating the current template in ToME.

This does not mean "equivalencing" all weapons, but just by nodding to realism on the way to playability.

The introduction of new damage types and new skill classifications should be the base for this "nod", which shouldn't be based on what's available for a specific class, but on the internal logic of the above two systems...

Artifacts should be based on Tolkien. That should be the alpha and omega of weapons and other items as well (though with enough space for "inspiration" being fleshed out by the DevTeam)...

Of course, this is a long-term proposition...

(and for mine, the *thancs shouldn't be Sentient... so there!)

I'm not balancing or rebalancing anything. I'm rewriting!

So yes, absolutely, the best artifacts in the game will be the big names in Tolkien. No more will Vorpal Blade or Mormegil be the best swords. Ringil and Anduril will once again rise to the top.

Did Dethanc and friends even appear in the books? If not, they won't exist in Arda.

Personally, I'd adore a sentient boomerang ;)

Neil: I haven't read every book in complete detail but I believe I would have picked up on Dethanc, etc. I say "no", but then I haven't read the Silmarillion.

The *thancs are not mentioned in any work of Tolkien I have read, and the only Google references to Dethanc et al. are to Angband derivatives.

I think Mormegil was a pretty damn powerful sword, but I haven't read the Silm in a while. Should read it again.

Hmm... Turin Turambar killed Glaurung with one blow from it... Then again, he was called "master of doom" for a very good reason.

If I recall correctly, Mormegil was the man not the sword. :-)

Yup, index of names in the Silmarillion says:

Mormegil 'The Black Sword', name given to Turin as captain of the host of Nargothrond, see Gurthang

and if you see Gurthang:

Gurthang 'Iron of Death', name of Beleg's sword Anglachel after it was reforged for Turin in Nargothrond, and from which he was named Mormegil
