Flavor Text For Defeating non-rand Bosses

#1 Post by tokugawa »

I have an idea. Those wonderful flavor texts when a boss kills you, like Prox clobbering you into soup, what if there was flavor text when the player character defeats a boss? And it would show up in the chat, just like when a player gets killed by Subject Z.

Ex: "Player Character" spaghettified Prox, the level x troll, on stage 3 of the Troll Mire and savored the fatty marrow from his bones.

I have zero experience when it comes to modding, and I have never coded in my life. I'd like to take a look into this further, because adding lore as the "The Scourge From The West" (or was it East, its been awhile lol) progresses would be fun! So, if anyone would like to offer a crash course on how to get started on modding for me, I'd appreciate it. I'm the kind who learns best by getting my hands on something, so getting direction into "how to dive into modding" would be the best way for me to grasp making a mod like this. I figure that, while it will take a lot of work, I'm only messing around with text & not messing with the actual game's code. For now, I'd be focused on the vanilla game's non-rand bosses.

Thanks! :D

In a sense, some of the achievements kind of do this, like Vampire Crusher for defeating the master. We all get an alert whenever someone does that. I'm not sure about messages for too many fixed bosses. Seems like it would be a lot of clutter in the chat.

Well, instead of appearing in the overloaded chat, it could get recorded in a 'Player Diary', along with other notable events.
Although I'm not sure if its worth the effort (but it might be a lot less effort than I think), we could be creating a character log of your journey through the game.
DoomRL did something similar, and I thought it worked nicely.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.
