Entropic Failure (Lesson 1 Entropy not progressing)

I'm trying to unlock the Cultists of Entropy and I (finally) got the book I need to unlock it. The problem is that I can't progress through the lessons. I'm assuming it wants me to use the Healing Infusion to get the Entropic Wasting status so that I am capable of using Entropic Gift on one of the dummies. The problem is that it won't give me the Entropic Wasting status when I use the Healing Infusion. Am I missing something? Is this a bug?
Another problem is that I exited the game while inside this Forbidden Tome area and I cant progress through it so now I'm stuck with no way out.

You can only gain entropy in combat. Punch the statue and then try it again.
