Randventurer Weekly(?) Challenge!

#1 Post by Cathbald »

To preface this, this is an idea I (and a bunch of other users in #tome on the roguelikes discord) had. We came up with a bunch of ideas for contests and the like and we figured this was the easiest one to implement

So, the aim of the game is to defeat the master in dreadfell with a given set of talent trees. You can play on any difficulty, with any race, and any non-cheaty addons (if you have to ask, its probably a cheat addon)

To put the rules in a more readable format:
  1. No cheat addons, this includes: Hulk, any form of choose escorts (no ez mode tinkers), any addon that modifies adventurer for a non QoL reason, any addon that modifies the number of points you receive on level up, etc.
  2. Obviously, no cheating. Don't hack your all damage values to 100000%. Thank you.
  3. Play online so the character is in the char vault. Makes it easy to track wins.
  4. No use of the vault please. Pulling out Sawrd might make your run easy, but it also makes it too easy.
  5. Beat master, win challenge. I don't care what you do after that.
  6. Use only the specified trees. You can unlock them in any order, normally obtainable trees such as antimagic, psiblades, staff combat can be bought without breaking rules. This excludes escort trees.
  7. Play on any difficulty you like, on any permadeath setting.
  8. Points will be obtained from a win and I'll put them into a spreadsheet (for posterity). Higher difficulty/harder permadeath means more points.
  9. All exploration wins are worth 1 point, easier wins are worth 0.
  10. Pick any vanilla race you want, class is always adventurer.
  11. Points are "elitism points", courtesy of dado. Elitism points are earned by completing the challenge. You are awarded 2 point for Normal, 4 points for Nightmare, 8 points for Insane. Playing on roguelike awards +2 points.
Feel free to link this wherever, we would love more people to join!

When you win, just drop your charsheet here, we'll add it to the spreadsheet.

Here are the allowed trees:
  • Class Trees Level 0:
    • cursed/gloom
      corruption/shadowflame
      spell/meta
      cunning/shadow-magic
      spell/necrotic-minions
      spell/animus
      spell/grave
      spell/nightfall
    Class Trees Level 10:
    • technique/bloodthirst
      psionic/nightmare
      spell/wildfire
    Generic Trees:
    • cunning/survival
      chronomancy/fate-weaving
      corruption/hexes
      spell/aegis
      wild-gift/call

Feel free to ask any questions, I wrote this in a bit of a haste.

Edit 1 : Here are the participants/winners so far :

Edit 2 : here is a list of addon that do not affect gameplay and so are accepted, not fully exhaustive but those at least are ok (thanks minmay) : https://pastebin.com/f2fH8uVa

I write guides and make addons too now, apparently

You can go here for a compilation of everything I wrote, plus some other important stuff!

Includes general guides (inscriptions, zone, prodigies), and class guides (Demo, Anorithil, Bulwark, Zerker, Sblade)

Do the 'optional area on the map' QoL addons count as cheating? I wouldn't think so, but I realise that 'Melinda on the Map' is seen as a bit cheaty because it lets you do the optional dungeon when you're ready, rather than skipping it when it ambushes you on the worldmap.

I already answered this on discord but I might as well respond here too for other people with the same question:
I don't care, its dark crypt, its your funeral.

Post edited to add the players currently in the race! (not a race though, we don't care who finish first, only who finishes :p)

Pretty much all escort addons will count as cheating. (meaning I can't think of a single one that doesn't but hey, I don't know everything!)

Added a (non-exhaustive) list of allowed addons, this should prevent some questions.

I'm not starting again with Convenient Digging turned off. It's an instant sustain, and cannot reasonably be used while there are visible enemies, so it's only going to tank a sustain removal if you turn it on in response to seeing an enemy with sustain removal, and if you're going to cheat you could just cheat.

If that loses me my elitism points then so be it.

yeah im not overly worried about that one, though it is interesting how it could be abused.

Same. And btw, Micbran here basically did all the work after we all pitched in ideas, so if I'm too lazy to answer listen to him :p

Players choice, though tinkers (the obtaining of the tree) is prohibited.
