Label zones by tier

#1 Post by Tryble »

I've been seeing this in chat a bit more often lately.
New players often end up wandering into areas they aren't ready for, and die for it.

Most of us see people asking what good dungeon order is and they typically get referred them to the wiki article. That's okay, but it'd probably save a lot of headaches for new players if the Maj'Eyal zones were just labeled by tier.

Alternatively, if starter quests directed people to all T1 zones before granting Into the Darkness, people would more likely clear all of those before moving on.

Personally I think it would be better just to organize zones for levels - similar to what was done in the Embers of Rage Campaign. Some fiddling with the numbers may be order for a few locations (Daikaira, Mark of the Spellblaze, and Ancient Elven Ruins come to mind) and some more descriptive warnings for areas inside others (like Bill, the Lake of Nur, and Temporal Rift) might need some work put into them, but I think that would be better their going with tiers.

You do get a message about it if you are heading into a tough area. It could be more explicit though.
However, in my experience it doesn't matter how big the cluebat is, some people will ignore it.

I'm not sure about other players, but personally when running through the Embers of Rage Campaign, I used the listed levels to determine what order of zones I would be running around in. This isn't to say that it was perfect - with Aeryn sitting in the front of the Gates of Morning, it is a little hard just to waltz into it, but for the most part it was pretty useful.

aaaaaaaaaaaand it is a game about dying and retrying and learning anyway, (like a RL is supposed to be) so they will know for the next time.

and if someone claims to have made it at first attempt, they are either lying, have shit-ton of experience elsewhere and watched videos, OR... there is a "well, technically" loophole like "this version".

IIRC, the text warnings on entering a dungeon work OK for this, but not always. (I seem to remember a lot of "this place seems super-hard" messages on dungeons I needed to run next, and a few in reverse.)

What I really would like to see, though, is a clarification in the quest log for the opening dungeons. Presently, it sends Dwarves to their second exclusive dungeon immediately after Reknor. My first character being a Dwarf, I followed the in-game instructions and wondered why everything was suddenly untouchable and even the trash mobs were hitting me for huge chunks of my health. Having been told by the game that this is where I should go next, I believed there were no other dungeons I could do and I got slaughtered. Shaloren and Ogres are similarly directed towards the Rhaloren Camp right after the Caves, which is really brutal.

I'm not opposed to characters dying as part of the learning experience, but I do feel like the game instructing new players to walk into certain death is a bit much. Even if you get a "Thrill of Terror" or similar message (can this happen for the hard T-1 zones?), it's not very noticeable if you don't know to look for it. I feel like a little clarification, even just "Once you've explored the world and become a little stronger, then move on to…" would be a good addition.

If the Rhaloran Camp or The Deep Bellows seem too tough - it may be moreso that those dungeons need to be redone - similarly to how Kor'pul was made easier.
