How do you tell how much damage a creature can do to you?

This is a big problem for me with rares, they have so many skills etc. that I can't really tell until they hit me, but by that point I might have been one-shot. It's made more complicated because I'm not sure what ability the rare will use on me. Tips?

Go by monster level. If it's significantly higher than you, running is advised. the rest will just take time as you learn the hard way and play various classes, memorizing what the skills are.

One thing I recommend, is keeping damage reducing torques on, appropriate for the element types you are facing on a given level. I find the physical variety best.

if you inspect it, you can see its weapon damage, +damage%, and talent numbers.
