It would be nice if there was a way to replay your last save prior to your last death. It would be a good way to try and figure out how to win a battle that finally defeated your character. So you can practice and try to find out how you could have won it.
My thoughts on how the thing can be implemented:
- Uses your previous save
- Disables further saves and unlocks for that character
- Gives your character a status effect that counts down for a certain amount of turns (ie: 500) before it perma-dies. Exiting the level would also cause your character to perma-die.
Alternatively, maybe the final death could port you back to the Eidolon who says that he no longer has the power to revive you and that you are not the one he has been looking for after all, but he will give you the opportunity to see what could have been and allow you to replay the last encounter as if he revived you normally, except you will have a permadeath counter, cant save, can't change the map, etc. since that is not a real timeline.

Re: Replay last death
I see no reason for this to be a thing considering Adventure and Exploration modes are already in the game
I think a big possibility that comes with those is the ability to capitalize on your death and learn from your mistakes, trying a different approach unless you're on your last life in adventure. Exploration less so, since you can repeatedly make the same mistakes and be forgiven for it.
I personally see Adventure as both a tool for more relaxed play and a tool for learning the game and how to overcome its challenges before tackling roguelike if you intend to play as such.

No. It's not a way to cheat the roguelike perma-death mechanic like adventure mode. If anything it teaches you MORE effectively than a full playthrough on normal/adventure mode because it's a particularly challenging fight (which I presume it is, given that it killed your final life) and you can use it to learn how to overcome it the next time you're put in a similar situation when you re-roll your character.
Re: Replay last death
Your system is "cheating" the roguelike perma-death all the same; After all, you're not supposed to be able to "practice" after you die, that's part of the challenge. You have to play until you get to that point to be able to try again. Nothing stops you from playing adventure and rerolling after dying once to get your practice though, after all an adventure win with 0 deaths is essentially the same as a roguelike win.

I'd like for higher permadeath runs to let you swap to exploration on dying. I want to see how far I can get on the real modes, but I don't want to stop playing as I get to the interesting bit.
