It might be better to brush up on your strategy rather than learning what is "best," as that differs from whom you ask.

But generally, shalore/archmage using the wildfire trees (which you need to unlock first).

EDIT: And you probably don't have archmage yet...

I'm a fan of using the dwarf bulwark as a start class. Not because it will enable you to beat the game on your first runthrough, but because it gives you a very gentle introduction to the game. You'll be able to survive a lot of early game punishment, and unlock some of the early game unlockables. Once you've run through a few times you can move on to a more challenging, but ultimately more successful, class.

Thalore Berserker should be pretty good and straightforward for newer players. Some people dislike the high experience penalty that Thalore has but it doesn't really matter since enemies scale with you in levels. If you are finding the experience penalty to be an issue, then try Cornac Berserker instead.
My wiki page, which contains a guide and resource compilation and class tier list.

Cornac Summoner.

Hands down the easiest class to start with in my opinion. It's all about placement of summons. Gear matters very little and you have no hard choices to make in terms of talent-point allocation.

You probably won't beat the game early on but this'll give you a solid run at it.

Alchemist is the simplest class. Just max the bomb tree and let your golem tank for you.

Use that to bridge to Wyrmic. Of the passively tanky classes they're the easiest to unlock. That, in turn, should get you far enough to unlock other stuff.

For race I'd go halfling. They have the highest life rating of any unlocked race tied with dwarves, don't have a magic penalty, have a slightly lower XP penalty, and don't have the Recknor start. For non-magic classes dwarves are more competitive and when you unlock wyrmic you probably want to switch to them.

what do you mean beat the game? I have got to level 11 but sad you cant save at end of level and then if you die pick up from save and go on.

PS thx for answers. struggling but addicted!

you can ctrl+s to save, and if you feel like you are about to die, absolutely no chance of survival, just took a 120 damage hit, have 15 left, powerful DoT, and all heals and shields are on CD... just alt+F4

bit cheaty, biut it works. if you recognise your situation in time.

I'm not going to share any details because that would ruin the fun of it. But there's a good long story line for you to follow; you've only just started to scratch the surface of the game.

Every time you die try to think about what you did that caused your death, and avoid it next time. Did you let an enemy get too close? Did you run into a room and get surrounded? Did you have no way to escape/heal/whatever? Always try to build up a little more to get a little stronger.

If you are having difficulty getting off the ground, you might consider checking out some YouTube Videos. I made a Let's Learn Series a while back myself - maybe consider watching it to get some ideas on some tips and tricks to survive further into the game:

I second Bulwark. They are tough and easy to use, from the beginning through all the starting areas and tier one areas.
Cornac and Dwarf are good starting races for Bulwark.

You could try a Halfling Archer - they have great racials to get more critical hits and dodge attacks ect. You could go bow and arrow, but I went sling and shield which seemed more thematically appropriate. Less offense, more defense. Shooting things from a safe distance is tons of fun after the frustration of getting your face punched in as a melee fighter.
