Hi! I'm Maven, new to the forums and relatively new to the game. I've been playing for just over a week now and I wanted to at least say thanks!
Regarding the game, I'm amazed at the dedication shown by the administrators and developers. I had no idea that Tales of Maj'Eyal existed until late December of last year when I watched my brother play it, and when I bought it I was under the impression the game had only recently been released. But...fourteen years? That's something you almost never see. And the hard work shows!
I'll admit that I've been slow to the idea of a roguelike. My first and almost last experience with the more traditional genre conventions was NetHack, and after not realizing a boss automatically put a no-warning kill disease on me that I had to somehow know ahead of time required a unicorn horn to heal...well, you can imagine how sudden I dropped it. The game felt too linear at times, too dependent upon exploits than actual strategy and diversity. When I got Tales, I was immediately struck by the depth of the class-building and leveling. The extreme number of options in loot also gave me hope. The reasonable but not too generous lives system of Adventurer mode was right up my alley, too. It took a while to figure out the mechanics, but I feel like I'm catching up, especially thanks to some viewers who've chipped in advice and insights. (By no means expect me to perform at super high difficulty levels, though. I can be far too careless and unoptimized to pull off that, so I'll leave it to the real experts. x3)
I love the embedded chat and achievement announcements, and the ability of game moderators to intervene in the case of some bugs pleasantly surprised me. But the small tastes of community I've gotten through those who've searched the game on Twitch or heard from on Twitter make the experience complete. I've unlocked everything but two talent trees and a cosmetic option, but I don't see myself stopping any time soon.
Hope I can contribute in the near future!
