Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please).
Without posting spoilers, I'm wondering what's involved to complete the campaign.
Perhaps an easy question to answer without spoilers: do you have to visit every zone to do so? I'm assuming you do but this is the dumb questions thread, so let me be dumb. The wiki seems to list about 70 zones (not including towns), is that about right or is the wiki out of date?
Is winning the game subject to finding a specific object or defeating a particular monster or both?
Also, what sort of character level are we looking at for completion? 50? 100?
I tried searching the forums and wiki for "complete the game" and "victory" but couldn't find out. I read both the website and wiki FAQs too.
I bought the game about three days ago on Steam. I really like it so far. It's only my second rogue-like and I hadn't played any rogue-likes until a fortnight ago.

Re: Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please
If you follow the quest progression it will eventually happen. Eventually you'll make it to spoiler-spoiler and defeat spoiler-spoiler. You'll be max level generally (level 50).

Thanks for your help
Can you say whether you end up going to all zones following the campaign trail?
I have noticed that different character races/classes start in different places. So does that mean that your campaign will be quite different with each race/class or do all of them end up visiting everywhere in the end?

Re: Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please
You CAN end up visiting most places but it's entirely possible to skip many places if you aren't a completionist. As far as specific starts go there are a handful of places you can only get to if you have that start. Aside from those there are also some zones that are not guaranteed to appear every game; some of those do get guaranteed for certain races.
Generally explore and have fun! As you learn more about the game you'll figure out just what is and isn't possible, optimal, and most fun for you.

Thanks again
I have been very much enjoying myself. I like that I have had games last 3.5 hours and others that last about 20 minutes.
I really like the cooldown systems and not having to worry about eating. The only other rogue-like I have played - and that was only about a week ago - was Dungeons of Dredmor. I was really enjoying myself with it and it got me into looking at other rogue-likes.
I'm pleased to have found this one because I don't feel ready to try any ASCII games yet.
I like the fact that my high score (after 8 games) is less than a hundred. Most games that have high scores put you into five figures no matter how badly you do. I have got to level 5 twice and haven't got a three figure score yet. I don't know why but I like that and also find it quite funny.
The other thing I really like is being able to see the chat while I play. Sometimes I see people dying at level one and two and I think "oh, OK, that does happen to other people too then!" and other times I see that people have achieved level 30 and it makes me think "wow!"
I think people would have advised me to stick to certain noob-friendly classes/races in ToME but I have been doing random pick every game and I don't mind if I die quickly, I like just trying out the different talents.
Thanks again.

DarkGod will be happy for a new minion - welcome
.
Soon enough, you will find out what builds suit you and soon enough you'll start to unlock more races and classes - and then you will find out that a single game can take you days in realtime - there's a lot to do in Maj'Eyal, even if quite a number of zones are not needed for the story (and some are even exclusive to certain races and classes - the first example being the Dwarf's two starting zones).
Read lore as you find it. Maj'Eyal is perhaps the most deeply developed and described world I've ever seen in a roguelike (with ADOM being the only competitor here). Several hundred pieces of lore, ranging from diaries of previous adventurers in various zones (usually not ending well) to a scientific compendium of various races present in the world, or a troll poem. You'll have a lot to read here, and there are some gameplay hints included in those pieces of lore as well.
Sticking to a noob-friendly build is good advice indeed, but you're very free to find out for yourself which of the builds suit you better. It may even be useful to get to know starting zones of particular races (Humans, Shaloren, Thaloren and Dwarfs each have their own starting zones). These are starting zones only - the world is the same for all races and classes, and eventually will bring you to the same zones every time.
And generally speaking - die and learn, explore and have fun

Re: Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please
1) there are 9(or 10, depending on how you count the last one) zones that you cannot evade, in order to win the game.
everything else is either a big side-quest, or a mere grind-land
2) hmm... google says the word is "interspersed"
3) the game is capped at 50, for the player at least. monsters can easly go wAAAAY above that.

Re: Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please
Thanks everyone
Not only am I still randoming, I have even turned off the option to have the computer allocate some of the talent points.
Since I last wrote on the forum I have found the wiki list* of all the talents and I am awestruck. Amazing.
* It's actually not a page with a list, but rather the wiki's category "talents" but since "category" has both a wiki software use and an in-game use I thought that would be confusing.

Re: Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please
The wiki isn't quite up to date. Exercise caution around chronomancer talents and (I think) some berserker talents.
A little bit of a starters guide written by yours truly here.
Re: Questions about winning the campaign (no spoilers please
there are a also a few psychic talents that no longer exist.
and i think i mentioned a few more in the general discussion forum.
if you want just the talents, visit here http://tometips.github.io/
