The worst death: the one that can easily be avoided.

I have now done two Yeek Archmages.

Then I hit an anti-magic patrol, I have no magic, all my sustains end and I die (in less or more time).

Advice?

Don't hit anti magic patrols.

They have a horrible layout for mages (who should scout and snipe those stupid zealots from a mile away) and the enemies are usually anti magic, which is anti fun.

If you do happen to hit one, your focus should be on defense. Scout for enemy locations thru use of arcane eye and plan accordingly. Another option would be racing to the exit of the zone, since arch age has teleport and phase door, you have a little bit of mobility. Also, consider a mental wild since (I think) that silence is most often a mental effect.

I almost made the portal out last time.

I think I ran into the patrol upon exiting the city.

My issue is that they zapped all my mana, by the 6 turn. I wasn't ready for that (I should have used teleport right on entrance) and was just throwing lightning bolts around like normal. I didn't have a mana surge rune. I got as far as I did using non-mana based skills (I had healing light also).

I also didn't know how to use the shield to regain mana.

Maybe I will try again, Archmages are powerful.

Mana surge is invaluable for this exact reason. As for disruption shield... You just activate it.

OK, I am playing again. A SB again but this time an elf. Not very good on the escorts (bad luck) but I am very happy with my itemisation so far.

I am doing stealth and ??time??

I have a ton of stat boosting equipment, I probably do not need to put any more in Magic.

Here is my character
http://te4.org/characters/66232/tome/51 ... 7cd56a6e10

Next 3 level ups are going to get 5/1/1/5 on Stealth, and then I am not sure what to do. Recommendations?

Elves level so much slower than Yeeks or Humans.

The Heroism inscription has already saved me once. I bought both it and the cloak.

And died, because I didn't have heroism up (I generally put it up after I engaged and went through a shield).

....

It was a vault, I thought that there was only an elite left in it...

Time shield is a fantastic one pointer. And essence of speed is worth it if you can shoulder the sustain cost.

Stat boosts are fine... But you might want to look for resists and +%dam type.

5/5/1/5 is recommended on stealth. Shadowstrike(?) is very powerful.
Illuminate is good with stealth. And shadow strike. Free crit in a large radius.

Shalore are good, but they have a low life rating and their biggest advantage doesn't kick in till 24. Personally, I prefer cornac. Probably a little too much.

Heroism is definitely one of the BEST inscriptions you can get. You're lucky you got one that early.

Looks like you got pelted pretty hard by those Giants. Not to be patronizing, but there's no point in having a heroism inscription if you don't use it.

I'm just going to suggest what worked for me: play Bulwark. They are super tanky, do decent damage, have decent resilience to status effects. They can be antimagic or magic with ease. They are relatively easy to build, focussing on just two stats. You don't have to worry about dying because vital abilities were on cooldown. You can play fast or slow. You can get to the east with unlocked categories, and there's nothing you need to win that they can't unlock with 2 points spare to max out inscriptions.

Bulwark has always gotten me farthest into the game soonest (e.g. first to beat starter areas, first to get to the east, first to beat the prides, first to win the game), no matter how much I practiced other classes I liked more thematically. After winning with Bulwark, I found it easier to progress with other classes, because the lurching into the unknown was done by a super-tank who could handle anything.

I get bored of bulwark unless I unlock something cool (although that was a long time ago).

I like shadowblade and have enjoyed that the most so far, although I get tired of it sometimes.

Died twice more, everything wasn't running as well though.

I might be tired of SB, and could try Bulwark?

Several more goes, all dead to not reacting quick enough. Maybe I am just too impatient for this game.

I liked where this wyrmic was going

I didn't like this Bulwark, sorry

I wouldn't really say Yeek is the best race for you if you're having trouble. Seems to me you're trying to make your first play through as hard as possible by playing Yeek and rogue like.

I am not very good with roguelikes, but I like them and have been playing them since the mid90s (Moria and Telengard mostly in the 90s (we had an old AT&T 8086 that was more accessible for me than the newer 486dx), others later). I am not sure if I have 'won' any other than Dungeons of Dredmore.

It doesn't interest me to play other than roguelike.

I use roguelikes as 'relief' from coding/paper writing.

I was enjoying this rogue that died to the Queen (her breath took away like 50% of my life). First death that I can remember to the Queen.

I feel like I do not understand what resists are necessary for the midgame yet.
