New Backup Guardian Ideas

#1 Post by Lubaf »

Just because I'm bored, and I figure these are something that should be easy to add, I'd like to suggest a pair of new Backup Guardians:

Somethingorother, The Ogre Reaver
An Ogre Reaver, found in the Rhaloren Camp. Possible description:
"This Ogre, sent out to find an artifact, has returned to the only home he knows."

Here's the other one, split into three possibilities:

The Shivgorath Lord
A giant Shivgorath. Found in Norgos' Lair. Possible description:
"A giant Shivgorath, apparently the cause of Norgos' madness."

Somethingorother, The Ice Mage
An ice-and-blight specialized mage/corrupter. (Yes, that's impossible for a non-adventurer player. Assume he's hung around the Grand Corrupter for a little too long.) Found in Norgos' Lair. Possible description:
"An ice mage, expelled from Angolwen for delving into the magics of the Spellblaze. His studies have apparently carried him here, although it's highly probable that he's the one responsible for Norgos' madness."

Anybody have an idea for a Backup Guardian for the Heart of the Gloom?

Thanks

if you do not clear the tranquil meadow (which only afflicted can do) before returning from the far east, the cursed archer will be upgraded and move into the heart of gloom.

because archer boss.

Most of the backup guardians have artifacts aligned to them, and the main reason to return... At least on normal where randarts are rare, and good randarts are even more rare.

The backup Guardians now are nothing more than a joke, except for Massok and Kor's Fury at times.
Pretty much they are only free XP and loot bags. If more are to be added I'd like a serious challenge, Ata-esque Guardians you'd really have to consider whether you want to go against or not.
Stronk is a potent combatant with a terrifying appearance.

The goal here is to provide some extra lore and a smidge of extra gameplay content, not to be particularly challenging or provide more loot.

I'd be interested in seeing a Thalore Archer take up residence in one of the Thalore areas, as Backup Guardian forex. It'd provide an interesting encounter, at least.

They could do with being more than just an extra boss added to an already cleared map.
Some sort of reason for both you and the new boss for being there.
Maybe give them a new floor in each dungeon as well or a separate dungeon.

eg. for the Spellblaze Similarcrum:
Upon returning to the west, you receive a quest telling you that powerful and aggressive magic is emanating from the Scintillating Caves and worrying the people of Shatur. You investigate and find a passage to an extra floor of the dungeon with higher level crystals and the boss.
The existing lore for that boss is sufficient explanation of what is going on, unlike the other ones.
Massok, Snaproot, Alduin, Corrupted Sandworm, Pale Drake, Kor's Fury and Nimisil have no apparent reason for being there.
I think I have heard that they are supposed to represent that problems with the world are getting worse and suggest impending doom. But its doesn't really work.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.

ok, how about this. a bit different from all the others...

put a sun paladin somewhere within the new hope.
all citizens within range of 10 of him, are set to follow him.
then, when the player see him, the paladin shouts "hey you!", and start going towards the player.
when he reaches the player, a dialogue opens.

apparently someone has accused the player of a very bad crime.
and the paladin, as paladins do, has to resolve it, but he believes the other npcs without a doubt, and refuse to listen to your objections.

something stupid like "you have to pay 4000 gold!"

ofc, at any time you can say "i have too time for this. DIE!"
or if you are a follower of zigur, yo can also say "a filthy magic user accuses me of ill doing?! DIE!
and if you try to evade the confrontation, though invisibility or teleportation, he will also become hostile.
and if he goes hostile the conversation doesn't happen.

something. we know paladins have came through. this one left before you reached the gates of morning and has not heard of your trip through the portal.

Many of those actually have lore logic behind them:

Kor's Fury is strongly implied to be the spirit behind the repeated haunting of Kor'pul (remember, it's implied in "How to be a Necromancer" that Kor'pul has been cleansed before, and fallen back into corruption afterwards).
Massok is an effect of the dragons in Daikara: He's specifically there in order to kill them for the glory of his Orcish Pride.
Pale Drake is the guy who takes over after you've cleared out the Dreadfell (Hey, free real estate!)
The Abomination is explained in story (he's an adventurer who was trying to kill what you've probably already killed, and wound up corrupted by the place).

There exist obvious fanwanks for the Corrupted Sandworm (he presumably found Atamathon's Lost Ruby Eye, and is only now fully corrupted by it), Nimisil (he rode in as a baby on one of the invading Orcs from the East, and is only just now grown enough to not be able to hide from you), and Snaproot (he senses the energies associated with the Portals on you).

For Alduin, though, I got nothin'.
