Sher'tul Fortress Butler Gone

#1 Post by disbroc »

Hello Everyone,

Finally doing well with a character and finally managed to rescue Melinda when I decide to go back to the fortress since the butler had asked me to return twice while I was in the dungeon, due to the extra amount of energy I have gained.

When I returned to the fortress I was confronted with the Weirdling beast again. I killed him and made my way back into the fortress when I noticed that my butler was no longer in the building. When I try to go to the orb again I get not choice to reactive the rod. I still have the item vault and have ~50 energy in the fortress.

The stairs that lead from the dungeon into the fortress are also missing, I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the case or not.

Looking around online I've seen several other people have this issue and no one seems to have been able to help; do I have any options? I really do not want to kill my first character that has done this well and start over again because of a bug. That would be extremely demoralizing....

Can I continue playing this character or am I just wasting my time? From my limited experience with this, it seems like the farportal would have been nice and I was looking forward to finally going through the Melinda quest line.

If anyone could provide any advice or possible solutions I would very much appreciate it. I can provide any additional details upon request.

Thank you everyone

Not going into details why this problem is known to me it sounds like your Nur map file has either gone missing or unreadable.
There are possibly other things that might lead to this situation but I know that's one.

Not more than a week ago I was forced to play a rather similar game, only I didnt have the Butler, Training Room or Items Vault. I did have Farportal Room unlocked, I think. Never used it though.

I don't think the problem is fixable without extensive editing of game files, if even then. In any case it's not worth the trouble.

What I would do if I were you is I'd play the game normally til the end. Be it either win or a horrible death, both are still achievable. For Melinda and Farportal and other Butler quirks you can experience them in another game. You will get a shot at them many moe times in the future.

For the problem to not duplicate I would suggest:
- Do not tamper with game files.
- Defragment your hard drive.
- Keep your file permissions and paths intact. If you need to play around with them then make note of ToME directories and don't touch them.

Just out of curiosity, what OS are you running and do you play on multiple computers? Are you using Steam with this game?
Stronk is a potent combatant with a terrifying appearance.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for all of the replies and information. I would like to say that I love this game and have spent a fair amount of time learning it. It's a rare event go get this far so I was a little disheartened to have this issue occur and posted about it right away. I thought that the fortress might have a role in the end game and had thought at the time that there would be no point continuing further. I am glad to hear that this is not the case and I am sure I will die a terrible death and have another chance at Melinda. I'm happy knowing that I could still try to beat the game with this character or what him die horribly :)

I am running this on Windows 10. I am playing this through steam, I do play on multiple computers and have noticed some oddness with the steam cloud and my games fairly recently that I haven't had a chance to look into yet. As far as I am aware I have had no data integrity issues. I did back up my documents folder recently, but I wouldn't suspect that this would be the cause of the issue since everything else had been working fine. I left the fortress after attuning my rod to that location walked a few steps and triggered the Melinda event. After completing the Melinda event I went back to the fortress and it seems the fortress was reset.

The primary computer I use is also used to host a few VM's and for some development so I have the games installed on that RAID array, while the Root C:\ drive is a SSD that is backed up from time to time. It is possible that there might have been some hiccup with this, but I've not had problems before or on the other systems. Data verification after this suggested everything was fine, however I have not looked into this deeper and am not familiar with how the game works to know if my setup might have contributed to this. For all I know it is likely...

Stuntofthelitter, I will do that thank you for your post. If there is anything I can do to help troubleshoot this issue further or help in any way please let me know. I would be glad to help anywhere I can.

Thank you guys.

Most people suggest turning off steam cloud. It screws around with saves, time to time.
A little bit of a starters guide written by yours truly here.
