Hrm, I've never seen an instance of failed level changing where there wasn't an error, but I've got no idea if Linux has the same issue as windows with regard to the output being cached before being written to the file, or how to disable it on Linux.
Can you add --flush-stdout to the launch command?

Adding --flush-stdout cured the problem and after getting to level 3 I could kill the unique and return - thanks

That shouldn't cure the problem. It should only stop the log being cut.

Well it did, as I said it loaded the level which I could then finish.

It is somewhat academic now as I have decided that tome is just about the worst game I have played in years, it certainly has nothing to do with role playing and I have deleted it.
