Seems like a cool game, but the one shot kill bosses....

Re: Seems like a cool game, but the one shot kill bosses....
naga myrmidon generates extremely rarely in the early lvl's and is only dangerous because it has a minimum lvl of 30.
also, mobs have a very low chance to be rares. so, maybe you can find the rare naga myrmidon once in a thousand games?
uhm, no. they are not ANY stronger than you (unless lumo vs SPal...), which means you die because you are stupid (or got a counter class).
this is rogue like, this game is random, and deaths happens. You are not meant to finish it in a single session.
you are supposed to learn the talents, predict the dangers, and when you lose, prepare better for the next time.
As someone said somewhere "dying is part of the fun"
if you cannot handle that then its just not your game.

There is a reason the game has an Adventure mode where you get multiple lives.
My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.

Play high HP classes with armor and resistances, a torque that reduces damage. Build your class with a better balance of defensive abilities. Equip items that boost your HP/constitution.Xitax wrote:So what? None of that matters. It's irrelevant because getting killed by these guys all the time is what happens. It makes the game much less fun.
Most pink guys I can handle, but I'm guaranteed to find one of these guys each game, eventually. And the higher level I am, the more likely I'm to find the guy who has that skill that kills me instantly.
If you're getting 1-shotted on normal from full HP you're doing something wrong. Or just have EXTREMELY bad luck

Real nice. You know, I think DG now lives off of people enjoying the game enough to donate. It's at least how he pays for hosting even if he still has a day job. Telling customers they're stupid is always the best way to keep them coming back.Radon26 wrote:which means you die because you are stupid

well i am not DG, and i am not good with being delicate.
if both have the same abilities and tools, the smarter one wins.
shadow lost to an AI, which is rather dumb, and and by the above...
player also usually has better items, giving him an edge... which was not enough to beat the dumb AI
as for the one hit knock out, cold bringer has already explained how to deal with it.

game is fun becouse it can be sometimes unfair: http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.c ... 4D97EB0E9/
but it's mine fault to open golden chest so early i wanted some pink monster, not pack of dragons
golden box/vaults/pedastals are this part, when you risk and have fun
if you see that you don't have chance run away, you should run for time to time.

Re: Seems like a cool game, but the one shot kill bosses....
I never open golden chests in dungeons with that layout because it killed 3 of my summoners in a row. My advice is to have some sort of escape before doing anything that triggers *truely* random events. You can't blame the game when it warns you beforehand.
Re: Seems like a cool game, but the one shot kill bosses....
if you rly want a game where you nvr die or at least dont die in some way that you dont like, you can always cheat. the developer mode is there. just load your save game in it and give yourself some more talent pts or something for the times you meet some unfair monster...
Re: Seems like a cool game, but the one shot kill bosses....
This thread has a few of my thoughts when I first played this game. ToME was a game changer for me. I played console games up until a work buddy introduced me to it. My first thoughts were "This game is cheating me" and "I've never not beat a game, what the hell". Since this game I haven't touched a console game. I look for games with perma death. The idea that I can win purely based on pushing through it and not based on a learning curve or skill made me a very weak gamer. I just wanted to hit everything. I've been playing ToME on and off for about 18 months and have quite a few wins under my belt. I prefer the harder difficulties over the normal. This game is a gem and even though it’s not the only game I play, it will probably be my favorite for a long time to come. It sets the bar pretty high in my opinion. Even the forums has a wealth of information on how to properly play this game. And if that isn't enough or you just don't have the time to use the forums just ask questions on the in game chat and multiple people will assist. I personally don't have internet a lot of the time due to work but I PDF a few guides on the forums to use at a later date.
I'd hate for anyone to turn away from this game simply because they had a rough play through. Especially when it could have been easily avoided. Everyone has a different way of playing this game but the one thing all people with wins have in common is they have a ton of deaths, a set routine, and they also skip certain trouble area's which becomes increasingly important at higher difficulty. Another point I'd like to throw out there is all classes can be OP on normal. To say Archer is weak or whatnot is a bad description of the class. They are not as mobile as some other classes but Archer can be an easy win on normal none the less. Normal especially on adventure can be won with any class and with any build. Your build can make it easier but just knowing the basics and when to run should get you a win on normal.
My advice is watch some videos and read up on some forums about the class you want to play and read up on the basics. There are tons of good forums posted to help you through the beginning stage of the game. Don't walk away from this gem. It’s a masterpiece that you can enjoy over and over again. Each class and each play through is vastly different. Rarely the randomness can make things miserable but that same randomness makes each play though original and enjoyable. Watching streams or video's is great because even if its not a class your interested in you can still see the way someone survives the low levels which will put you ahead of the game on any class.

Re: Seems like a cool game, but the one shot kill bosses....
I wonder what the record is for number of hours played without winning. I surely must be zeroing in on it
I totally agree with you on this. This game is by far my favourite game because of the replayability. It's not just that, but I find that I make up stories as I go along and build classes in strange ways just to satisfy a desire for role playing. In normal, pretty much all builds are viable up to a certain point and it's fun. I tend to die because I open vaults and then see level 54 forge giants and think, "Awesome! It would be *epic* if I killed that with my level 21 guy with ridiculous build." To be fair, I always find a way to do it, but it often takes me 3 lives
I die a *lot* simply because I'm having too much fun!
More to the point of this thread, if you want to win you have to understand that if you are not super careful you *will* encounter opponents that you *can not defeat* at your present level (without dying a few times, anyway). This goes against the "hero narrative" that exists in most games. I think a lot of the backlash comes from people who stubborning stick to the feeling that they *should* be able to win in every situation, because all the games they have played up to this point teach them that it is reasonable to expect it.
There is always enough information present in every encounter to determine what your odds of success are. Running away, building yourself up somewhere else and then coming back is a completely viable strategy. People complain about getting one-shotted (which in understandably frustrating), but there are many, many strategies to avoid it. If you have telepathy via some wand, or some skill, you can scout ahead for dangerous foes without risk. If you have summoning ability, you can summon something ahead in the room before you enter (to see if they get blown away). If you are ridiculously over powered (which can happen with some builds), then you can simply tank the first blow and not worry so much about being one-shotted. Finally, most of the really dangerous situations are simply avoidable -- don't enter any area with a warning.
I would hate if this game abandoned the notion that death was just around the corner.
