YASD: Anaferosyru the level 31 Lich Necromancer

It appeared that everything was going great: I saved all the escorts, got the Celestial/Light tree from one Anothoril plus a few improvements for it from a few others, then Stone Alchemy and Stone Touch form Alchemists. Got the Ring of the Archlich from the Dreadfell's depth 7 vault, -- the level 42 ancient lich guarding it was interesting, but his lack of cold resistance was his undoing. Saved Melinda, turned into a lich. Beaten the Master quite easily, but unfortunately got complacent, forgetting to use Sacrifice when facing against the orc ambush and lost to them.

Thing were great, until I entered the spider cave in the East. My limited vision proved to be my undoing. You would think that lite 2 plus infravision 4 would be enough, but alas. A rare spider with Archer's talents have been hitting me for something like 200 damage in one turn before I have seen him and instead of walking that one step to the stairs and leaving the map, I Teleported away and... Landed near another rare spider with Archer's talents! The bastard then proceeded to shoot me to death, since my Blurred Mortality have been turned off somehow, despite being set for auto-cast. Maybe I should have had more mana- and less health-increasing items at this point? I guess I shouldn't have had Stone Touch on auto-cast when enemies are adjacent too, -- it was normally quite convenient, but in that case I missed a turn, possibly costing me my unlife.

For some blasted reason, there were also wormholes around in that cave that absorbed my spells and hit everything around for arcane damage, including me! I guess this was an alternative zone of some sort, but why there were no warning, or message about what wormholes would do? Overall, the going was great, but I have constantly felt starved for class points and felt like I am spreading myself too thin with many different talents, getting another beam spell after becoming a lich certainly helped.

Maybe I am going to try a Higher for my next character. Is there anything I was doing wrong?

Wrong isn't necessarily the right word, given that this is a rogue-like, but: that cave is full of wormholes that explode with antimagic when a magical effect hits them and teleport you if you're on them when they're hit. There's a lack of telegraphing that can be infuriating, but that's part and parcel of most rogue-likes.

For an antimagic build (obviously not possible for necro) there's no threat that isn't everywhere else too. For a necromancer: it can be a trap filled hell-hole.

If you didn't know about them, then the only thing you could have done, was to prioritize light radius (often a good idea anyway) but it still might not have saved you. In the future my advice is simply to skip it during a magic playthrough.

Huh. I remembered that I actually visited these caves before as a Necromancer, I guess it wasn't as much of an issue then due to a different build...

A pop-up informing about the exploding anti-magic wormholes would be nice, though, -- we get one for "sharply distorted angles" in Scinnilating Caves, but not here? Doesn't make sense.
