Starting Equipment
I know this idea has been tossed around before, but I'm tossing it around again because this really ought to be a thing.
You know how Sun Paladins start with a mace, a shield, and a greatsword, to allow you to use Stunning Blow or Shield Pummel right from level 1? All classes should start out with their potential alternate starting gear, just like that. for example, Wyrmics can learn both two handed and one handed, so they should start with both. Archers can use bows or slings, so they should start with both. And the list goes on.
This is really just a matter of convenience for starting out. The starting gear is replaced very quickly, but in the meantime at least you have access to your abilities without having to get lucky and find the appropriate weapon.

Toss it around again in the right forum.

Re: Starting Equipment
Um this would be the right forum Housepet, this is the spot for ideas and suggestions; "All new ideas for the upcoming releases of ToME 4.x.x should be discussed here". You seem to be acting as if you think this is the nonexistent modding forum. This is definitely the right spot for him to suggest a future change to starting equipment.
That said I'm not sure I like the suggestion. As it is we have a lot of flexibility in what we start with simply by picking the right race and class options. Sure I don't normally like being forced to start with runes versus infusions but it makes sense based on the back story and the culture of the world. In the same way I believe that the starting equipment for the different races reflects the training provided to a young person going into that profession. The archer does get a sling and stones, and it's been mentioned that the Sun Paladin starts with a Mace, a shield, and a Great Sword . . . but many classes can use a ton of different weapons and play styles, especially when you are looking in the warrior and rogue meta classes.
More equipment means more encumbrance, eventually more gold at start, and more time spent micromanaging your starting build instead of exploring and seeing what loot and/or escorts pop up early on.

Re: Starting Equipment
I accidentally posted it in the wrong forum and it has since been moved to the right forum, so there's no need for personal attacks, man.
As for more encumbrance and more gold, not really. The starting equipment is worth less than half a gold. It hardly means anything if you sell it. It would just be nice to start with both a 2h sword and a sword/shield for classes that can use either style, so that I don't find my Wyrmic unable to use shield bashes until I either find a shield or go buy one.

Re: Starting Equipment
I am confused by 'nonexistent modding forum'.
I thought it was worth discussing, and that it should be in the right forum for maximum discussage, but I don't have the ability to move them.

Re: Starting Equipment
Anyways... Back to the topic! I like the idea, it's just that you might have to adjust some encumberence values. The struggles of finding a shield as cursed shall hopefully be gone...

Re: Starting Equipment
Why would you need to adjust encumbrance? Unless you're a brand new newbie, you have a transmog chest. Just TM whichever set of gear you don't need and keep the one you do. I doubt the extra .4 gold you get will unbalance the game or anything.

Or you could drop the stuff.

Re: Starting Equipment
Full apologies for any inferred personal attacks I have medium functioning autism and my words often come out to regular people in a vastly different way than I intend. I have no tone control and no subtext to my speech. Everything I write is exactly what I meant to say without any hidden meanings, innuendo, or tonal content. I saw a two content topic ending with someone being accused of something they didn't do, so I made the necessary correction. I also tend to put together a lot of data all at once.
In the case of mentioning the non-existent modding forum it was a reference to the previous post Housepet had aimed directly at me in another thread where he expected me to know Lua and check the code to figure out unclear mechanics rather than running in game experiments and posting feedback and discussion based on them. That comment to me being so quickly followed up by him apparently trying to push an idea out of this forum led to the conclusion that he felt this was a modding forum; something which may in fact be needed and that he might want to suggest having added to the website. It would be a good idea.

"You" referred to everyone in that thread, not specifically you.

Re: Starting Equipment
Thanks, sometimes with comments like that I get paranoid. I don't want to offend.

Re: Starting Equipment
...Other than wyrmic which class needs this, really?
Have you tried pressing 'q' to switch your sets? Archers DO start with both bows and slings, one is in the offset (I believe it was slings.) Rogues also have slings in their off-sets.
I can't really think of any other class that needs this other than deciding to make an off-build of some sort, for which you shouldn't be expected to have starting gear for!
