while playing with the hotkeys (right mouse button on an icon), one of the icons disappeared from the bar (the icon I assigned the key replaced it !).
I tried to move the new icon in case the old one was below it, but no, it really disappeared, unbound apparently.
Same problem can happen if you use "unbind", then how do you take it back to the bar ?
You can assign hotkeys from the talent screen, but I didn't find how to put back a disappeared icon there...

press m to view the whole list, and then drag it back.
as for disappearing...
if you had an item that grants ability, like pickaxe, transmogrifying it will take away that ability (or at least the set amount of points it was giving you.)
if you are moving abilities you have to watch out for the border void. if you drop the ability JUST in between 2 slots, it will be unassigned, instead of reassigned
if you tryed to swap the 2 abilities and one of them disappeared... then i dont know what to tell...
also, you cant auto cast charms. if you right click a charm ability from an item, it will just disapppear.
those are the "rules" i know.

if you have an item with charm, the charm will be obviously assigned when you equip it.
unequipping it will not unassign the ability, but will change its frame from yellow to green (or the other way around?)
pressing that button will make you equip the item, if it is not already equipped. if it is, it will activate the ability.
even if an item dont have any abilities, you can drag the item into hotbar, for easy way to find and switch, if you have clutter.

Ah thanks, I hadn't noticed you could simply drag and drop the icons from the talents dialog directly to the icon bar, I knew it was stupid...
Anyway the disappearance was probably a small bug, when I assigned hotkey 1 to "channel staff", its icon moved to where "luck of small folk" was and replaced it.
I just draged and dropped its icon back so everything is back to normal, thanks !

if you drag an icon from slot a, then the other ability will be send to slot a
but if you drag the icon from ... nowhere, then the other ability will land nowhere.
