How to spend a category point?

#1 Post by berenbelagund »

OK, my dumb question for the day:

On a dwarf berserker, what is best to do when you get the category point at level 10? Unlock another inscription (can't have enough of those!), or unlock the Bloodthirst class talents? Is this a no-brainer, or is the answer contextually-sensitive?

You can expand a category without actually spending a point. That way, you can look at the talents that it offers. Bloodthirst generally provides passive skills, but the final skill, unstoppable, makes you unkillable for x turns. Really, it's up to you. If you have plenty of places to put your class points, you could go for an inscription. If you feel like you're running out of valuable places to put your points, go ahead and get the category. Personally, I prefer to spend my first category point on a talent tree and my second on a inscription, unless I have a plan.

Getting another inscription is always good, though. A movement infusion, if you don't have one already, is very good. Heroism gives your character a bigger hp buffer. Teleport allows for easy escape, but possible into another fight. All in all, inscriptions are more... Flexible. Categories are more narrow, but more focused on your character.
A little bit of a starters guide written by yours truly here.

You can also use it to improve one of our current talent categories known.
On my current (and first...) dwarf berserker, that's what I did, improving the Two-handed assault talent from a 1.3 to a 1.5 multiplier. BTW, the guy hits hard and he would still have plenty of lives if I was more careful during battles.

For me it depends on the diff level.. On Normal there are so many.. less than +builds availible. Min max / newb trap. I would say go for it.

If you gotta nice inscription? Like 4 is beyond nice, but you need to overwrite something.. go for it. I like playing halfling and i cat the racial tree. There are better races.. but if you got or want to cat a tree.. and you can afford losing an inscription..id go for damage

You can have the weirdest build and win..

Do you have a movement infusion?

Edit: Your ability to re-position and control/limit the damage...

OK, thanks for the help everyone. I'm seeing that it does depend on other factors, like which infusions I currently have. The Bloodthirst tree is so good, it's hard to imagine unlocking it later. But if I have a fourth inscription that is really good, then... maybe.

As a quick rule of thumb, having 5 inscriptions is great and improving a category multiplier is a wate. Exceptions exist (undead generally get less out of inscriptions, for instance), but it holds pretty well in most circumstances.

OK, thanks. I just spent it on Bloodthirst again, just prior to reading your post, so I guess I'm addicted. Next time I'll see what a 5 inscription character can do.
