[1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
So I recently played a paradox mage who, at some point in her life, got dreamscaped by a monster. It was relatively uneventful; Only one projection died and the monster got slaughtered.
However, more recently I've noticed something strange going on. First, for the character itself there were some strange combat log messages about "Ihki's dream projection" hitting some things when I was doing the Vor armoury vault. I didn't pay much attention to that as I was busy with something else at that moment.
See http://te4.org/characters/52579/tome/09 ... 3e5db95bcf for the character in question.
Recently, however, those same messages have come back on every single character I've made. When the PM was dreamscaped, she was wearing some fire aoe cloak that had a very unique yellow look, though I can't really remember which one it was. Anyway, for every character I've made since the death of the PM, I've had an invisible dream projection standing somewhere on the map with that same fire aoe cloak on (you can see a picture of the old character with the cloak in combat log) killing my escorts, enemies and even myself.

as good examples of deaths to the dream projection. Example 1 died in escape from Reknor, and had seen the projection on the previous level too. Example 2 died in the derth arena just after finishing off the last opponent. That one had also completed Trollmire 1-3 and found the projection standing near the northwestern corner of each of those maps.
From what I can tell, the projection always stands some fixed distance from the upper left corner of the map, which in the case of the arena seemed to be roughly in the middle. The floating numbers for the life drain can be used to locate the projection and it is usually inside a tree or a wall, so it doesn't seem to be anything physical but just some entity that shouldn't be there. I probably wouldn't even notice it if it wasn't for the cloak she is wearing.
edit: I can confirm this happens on the world map as well. I take damage from the projection in the northwestern parts of the arctic.

This is the most epically meta bug ever!

My feedback meter decays into coding. Give me feedback and I make mods.

Maybe it is happen because some of you character have equal names. Anyway, very specail anomaly.
Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
It is very likely the haunting sticks because the new chars you make have the same name as the old one and so the game loads the save even partially when you make a new one.
You could try making a completely new name char and see if he still faces the ghost.

Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
Could a... useful ghost be created?
Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
Tried out something with a name that doesn't even share any characters with the usual one:
http://te4.org/characters/52579/tome/f9 ... 6af238b533
"Cooked to death in level 1 of world of eyal" as I died to the fire aura on the world map.
Also, after some testing, it doesn't seem to hurt the enemies at all which can lead to me rushing to someone and finding myself in the middle of the aura without a way to escape in time.
edit: Yet another "Ihki" started after this has not found the projection anywhere despite actually looking for it. I made another "Test" character who did promptly die to the aura though. I then made "Test2" who was also burned to death by the projection. It seems that the one differently named character gave Ihkis a break, at least for now. I cannot say if the ghosts will come back for the next incarnation of the Great Ihki, but the test character definitely did something.
edit2: The last Ihki died and the projections are now back for everyone.

All this sounds like a horror movie - ghost of a dead character kills off all your other avatars, ruins your social life online, then someday pops out of your screen...

"Its not a bug, its an anomaly!"

This sounds like it could almost be related to the other Fearfire Mantle bugs, i.e. random damage to offscreen enemies when not wearing the cloak, and damage to enemies on the world map.

Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
Hmm. So, I was wearing the fearfire mantle for a big chunk of the game, but now have something else on. On the world map I'm now seeing my character hitting Something for 0 fire damage every turn, as if the field was present somewhere.
I was also wearing the Tree of Life for a long time, but got a corpselight ego light from the merchant so took it off. Frequently I'll find myself taking 3 nature damage every turn in a small range in various parts of a map. Once I move out of that range, or take off the undeath lamp, I stop taking damage.
For some reason this reminded me that when you zone in to an area where you've cast Sun Ray (as a sun paladin) you can momentarily see the streak from the sky particle effect in places it was cast. That very likely isn't related, but there is definitely some strange persistent memory of various things.
That said...the originally mentioned problem is still weird as hell.
Edit: now I'm noticing that I hit Something for 0 fire damage every turn even while not on the world map.
Edit 2:Saving and reloading cleared the fire damage bit.

Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
After some testing, it does seem it is save&reload that actually clears the projection, though only for that character. I'll get into the habit of doing this for every new character from now on. The tree of life issue seems very similar to what is happening in all my games, except the fearfire mantle doesn't really give two shits whether you're undead or not.Stuntofthelitter wrote:Hmm. Not sure if it is relevant at all, but you actually seem to get not one, but two separate fire aura/life drain ticks per turn when walking into the projection (40 damage/turn). It might be that there are actually two projections standing there or do I remember the item wrong?
Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
thanks for this. it was truly horror. my not yet budding doombringer never had a hope!
i followed the save and reload advice, after deleting the savefiles of both the haunting character and the character afflicted. my current doombringer has a new name...
hopefully i'll now be free of the winner who haunted me.

if everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane
Re: [1.3.0] Haunted by a past character's dream projection
THIS BUG IS STILL IN EFFECT AS OF 1.3.1
I'm having exactly the same problem that guy is, except I had a stone warden with a tree of life who got dreamscaped
the tree of life ticks twice per turn for 6 nature damage or 5 healing
I tried removing the vault file AND save file from the ToME directory and I'm still getting this bug with new characters
I can only imagine that the source of this bug is the charball files which I should've uploaded to gatheringspot when I uploaded the savefiles by themselves to gatheringspot; hopefully you can download the charball files from the character vault like you used to be able(didn't you?) to if it'd present a problem
I may have to make get an entirely new download of ToME
