no Master - how to continue?

#1 Post by Psyringe »

I have explored pretty much the entire level 9 of Dreadfell, but cannot find the Master. I read that this is a known bug, so I'm not posting it in the "Bugs" section - but my question is: what can I do to continue?

I am computer-literate enough to extract a savegame and edit some files, of that helps.

I am using Steam version 1.2.5 (cloud saves turned off) with no mods. I did leave level 9 to drop loot off at the fortress, but I had explored the level completely before, and found no Master.

I wanted to attach my savegame, but I get an error message about a maximum allowed file size of 256k, which is kind of problematic for a game that have saves getting over 10 MB in size.

Hello Psyringe,

there are two things you can try:

1) It may not be a bug per se, but more often than not (in my experience, at least), the level generator on Dreadfell:9 creates a section of floor that is disconnected from the rest of the level, and the Master may happen to be generated there. The solution then would be simple - just dig your way through. Check the minimap of the level for some larger areas that are inaccessible to you, and if you have access to the Track talent (or other forms of telepathy and/or magic mapping), even better for you.

2) There's a mod called "Bosses gone AWOL" that helps a lot with missing bosses. You may want to check the addon page for this one.

A train station is a place where trains stop.
On my table, there is a workstation ...

Thanks, that worked! :)

I had seen this mod before, but didn't try it because someone in in-game chat said that mods cannot be added to games in progress. As it turns out, it can be done, I just had to be careful to follow Marson's instructions exactly:
Marson's instructions wrote: In order to enable this addon for existing characters, you will need to edit the desc.lua file in the character's save directory and add this addon's name to the addon list: "marson-awol"

If you are using Steam, the edit may not take. To help this along, turn off cloud backups for ToME. Start ToME, click 'Load Game', and click once on the save game name. Edit and save the desc.lua file. Click the save game again to load the game. Hopefully this will allow the change to take hold, but you may have to try a couple of times.
It was crucial to do the edit to the desc.lua file exactly between the two clicks on the save file. Doing the edit at any other time caused the file to be overwritten before the edit would take.

After adding the mod to the savegame, it teleported the Master into a room in level 9. I am now continuing happily with my game - thanks for the advice! :)
