Undead Explosion: 49 damage or 1400 damage?!?
I'm not sure what's up with this skill but as I've started to pay more attention to the mechanics, I've noticed that when I use that spell… it only does two types of damage: even less than the description would suggest… or an obscene amount more.
Literally, I was getting damage (lvl 1 UE) of between 41-49 or in excess of 1400. No in between. What's the deal?

It does say its a percentage of the undead's maximum life.
And since the vanilla version of the talent only does blight damage, I presume you are using an addon that tweaks it.

I'd never really used the skill because it super sucks but I was trying to eliminate minions and saw it do insane damage so I did it again until it happened again. I was on level 50 and pretty buff but still, it was weird.

Were you perhaps proccing an on-spell ability? That'd give you extra damage types as well as possibly explaining the variance. Admittedly, UE should do more than 49 and I doubt any spell proc hits for 1351 damage, but it makes some amount of sense.

The character died but I'll run another Necromancer and see if I can reproduce it. I seriously never use that spell...

People seem to have latched on to the "two types of damage," but if I'm reading correctly I think what he means is it either does very little or a ton. Not that it's dealing blight and fire (for example).
Then again maybe I'm the one reading it wrong.

I don't use Necromancers enough to have insight, but the OP did seem to be talking about how weird it was that damage was either tiny or huge, rather than damage being some other DamageType. The OP never mentions any different DamageType names.

Delmuir, is your character still alive? Could you link us to it? That'd less us get a look at talents and equipment and such.

You read it right… it was unclear though. I had the game on Dev mode as I was exploring problems with the Necromancer and it was just one of characters that had been run during Dev mode. I just hadn't realized that it was still on. I've since made a new Necro in the proper mode and gotten it to level 16 and have been using the spell over and over again, trying to duplicate the problem, and nothing odd seems to be happening.
I'm going to chalk this up to a quirk of Dev mode unless I stumble across it again.

That shouldn't happen. Dev mode won't affect anything unless you change it, and there shouldn't be anything you could do without a lot of deliberate work to make UE work like that.

For instance, (at least in the first version) getting a demon seed never failed if you had dev mode running.
Not sure if it has anything to do with the current situation, though.

That wouldn't be random damage value oscillation, though: you'd just get a huge buff to your damage from that point forward.

That's whats weird… it wasn't just a major increase, it was exactly as you wrote it, an oscillation. It just went back and forth between 47 or so and 1400 or so… I was able to get about a dozen of each figure.
It wasn't on god mode though… otherwise it would have been hard for me to die, ha ha. I was just checking things like minion skills, etc.
