Lanterns

#1 Post by Seian Verian »

As the game is currently, if you don't find the Summertide Phial as an early drop, you're almost certainly stuck with a rather small light radius for a good while. This can range from frustrating to -maddening- to deadly depending on which dungeon you're delving into. Sandworm Lair is hell with a light radius of less than 4.

So, here's an idea- A Light shop. There probably doesn't need to be more than one, likely in Last Hope, but it would be extremely useful. It would have a number of various types of lanterns for sale, and perhaps a few other items with egos that increase light radius.

Another, tangentially related idea- Summertide Phial and Wintertide Phial would seem to be counterparts, going by their natures and names. They can't be a set, considering that they share the same item slot, but I think it would be interesting if they could be combined into a single item with special effects.

I've noticed Bright lanterns, post ego tweaks, are helping a lot with earlygame lite radius annoyance.

To me, if anything, this makes the idea of a lamp shop better, and not worse, though. May as well make it reliable to get one, even if it is a common enough ego.

I would *love* a lamp shop. Low light radius drives me insane, especially on ranged characters. I won't even attempt sandworm until I get something with light radius 4+, too many deaths to losing sight of the worm I'm following and taking a wrong turn down a tunnel. Or getting pinned by giant gravity jerks from out of LoS so I can't shoot back at them. That's always great.

Yeah, lamp shop would be <3

People do ask in game chat if there is one.

+1 to this. I usually find a decent one before I'm out of the tier-1 zones now, but when I don't its pretty frustrating.

Good idea but I've got an extra suggestion...sells diggers there too!

It's thematic ('spelunking supply shop?')and provides the chance of getting a digger(perhaps even a magical one) to people unlucky enough not to not find one soon.

Doesn't the curse lifting quest guarantee a low-level digger?

That is true, but putting a shop in Last Hope (and the dwarf town too - again, thematically appropriate) might mean you can get that before doing that quest (which I think is like, level 8) and having a shop that ONLY sells light sources seems a bit too specific to me.

How about a roaming peddler (a fixed NPC that wanders the western map) to sell these things?
I'd suggest he sell anything that goes in the tool or lite slot (filter = "tool", "lite", "charm").
I put a similar vendor in my Vulcus addon.

Then add jewelry to that vendor. My oozemancers will be grateful

Light/digger shops are something of an inexplicably inconsistant lack in the game so I'm totally in favor of adding one.

I'm definitely in favor of a lite shop.

That being said, you should keep staves and wands of illumination on hand, if you don't have a good lite (or if you have a good lite with bad light radius - wintertide phial comes to mind). Their area of effect is larger than most early light sources you can find and they brighten things up permanently. Staves in particular are nice and you only need a bit of magic to equip tier 1 or 2 ones to your off-set.

I want to bump this a bit simply because I lost a character due to a dumb mistake of going anti-magic while the only lantern I had was arcane-powered. It was one-time ever oversight but cost me one of my most promising characters for that build (having had really good drops to that point).

I managed to get all the way through eight levels, EIGHT, and never even saw another lantern until I died.

Please add a lantern shop.

An addon I'm using ("improvedstores") adds a lantern & digger shop in Last Hope, among other new shops.
Check out my addons: Nullpack (classes), Null Tweaks (items & talents), and New Gems fork.

Also weapons pack makes gem stores carry miscellaneous stuff.
Addons: Arcane Blade Tweaks, Fallen Race, Monk Class, Weapons Pack
Currently working on Elementals. It's a big project, so any help would be appreciated. :)
