Trying to decide what type of character to play next. I'm noticing a trend in that my winners are all heavy armor types with plenty of escapes/resists/heals. Should I
A. Take on higher difficulties with my preferred classes?
B. Try to adapt to squishier ones to broaden my overall skills.
Mostly wondering if anyone has had a similar quandary and how they handled it.

Could try playing another class that can take a hit, like Bulwark or maybe Wyrmic. Otherwise, yeah, I don't think there's a way to go wrong here. I have trouble switching to other class types myself, as I tend to get comfy with particular playstyles, hence my suggestion.

Well nightmare is harder but similar to Normal due to extra levels.
Insane+ though adds the extra wrinkle of a whole lot of extra rares/uniques/randbosses (like 10x more). Also starting the higher difficulties tends to need some special stuff like getting a mindblast torque or drowning NPCs.
Anyway nightmare is a bit harder and Insane+ actually changes how the game plays some and may require more versatility than some classes normally have. Also due to the much higher talent levels in Insane+ certain defenses may have different implications (you may find armor more impressive than physical resistance due to spellshock for example).
I think its rather academic which option you go for, on higher difficulties even an awesome heavy armor guy will need to resort to similar tactics that less protected guys do. So one way or the other you will be exposed into expanding your tactical landscape. I mean basically on Madness if you can't make use of zig zag tunnels you are pretty much gonna die, that is true for Archmages and Marauders.
