Transferring just one item in a stack?

How do I give just one alchemist gem to my golem?

Giving an entire stack (and the golem subsequently wearing that entire stack) is all I can figure out to do, and it's not like the bonus applies for each gem in the stack. My golem's currently wearing 8 agate and 11 quartz >_<

EDIT: You can work around this by dropping the relevant gems (and being prompted to select how many), and then having your golem pick them up.
If you want to equip 2 of the same gem type, you also have to equip one gem before you pick up the other gem.
