[1.2.3] Semi crash after exiting the game

Hi all,

My ToME tends to crash/hang after exiting the game. The game seems to exit but leaves the main screen on display. The mouse returns to the Windows mouse and I can actually start other programs by using the keyboard but I can't see it happening; the ToME screen obscures all. Task manager and/or the ctrl-alt-del screen won't display. All I can do to fix it is a hard shutdown of the pc.
Details: steam version, Windows XPsp3, Laptop with ATIx1300 mobility (yes, ancient stuff). Drivers are as recent as they can be (meaning manufacturers updating them stopped long ago). Game runs in full screen 1280x800. Thanks for any info.

Update: as it turns out the game exits normally, doesn't hang, but simply doesn't return the desktop to normal. Only when run in windowed mode the desktop comes back after exiting the game. When the game runs fullscreen in a resolution that isn't native it leaves the windows desktop in the game's resolution after exiting. Only fix is a restart of the PC.
When run in windowed mode and a lower resolution than native the hotkey bar isn't displayed correctly (the buttons are to the left outside of the viewing area).
I've seen suggestions for disabling visual themes, tried, doesn't help.
