I'm running a wood elf ranger and am to the point where I really need to choose my specialty. Advice would be appreciated.

I prefer crossbow-mastery (crossbows hit harder and their ammo is nastier) to bow-mastery, but if you're playing with maximize on and weight is a concern, you might want to go with bow-mastery.
There are many more artifact bows, but in my experience a Heavy Crossbow of the Haradrim will blow them out of the water.
But really anything but boomerang-mastery is all right...

Well, I prefer crossbows in general, for the same reasons Lord Dimwit mentioned... but Wood Elves get a bonus for bows (which I discovered recently in another thread.)
Thanks for the clarification. Is that in the documentation somewhere that I've missed? I've looked, and have only found the extra [0.200] to archery in r_wodelf.txt and the +40 to Misl (which I presume, now, is for all missles) in birth.txt.Neil wrote:They get +1 generically and an additional +1 for bows.
One thing I like about bows is you can improve you arrows at the Archery. Using this wisely you can have a lot of arrows of the same kind instead of wasting your inventory slots with 20 arrows with a bonus of this and 20 arrows with a bonus of that.
One game to rule them all, one game to find them
One game to bring them all and at the keyboard bind them

I agree with that statement in this sense: I think it's unfair that you can't improve shots/pebbles and bolts the same way. (I posted about that before. *grumps*)Sven wrote:One thing I like about bows is you can improve you arrows at the Archery. I disagree with that statement in this sense: Once you have decent archery skill, you can create ammo of sufficient plusses (and brands) that no shop is going to even you out between different batches. Those ammo shops are only useful in early and midgame.... and even then you can do better than that with scrolls of enchant to-hit and to-dam, if you have enough AU. The shop can help you at least get started in the right direction, sometimes, such as if you find something silly like (+3,+9) -- but most of the time I get the "sorry, we can't help ya" message. (Then again, I tend to run characters with very strong archery abilities; other character classes may find their mileage varies.)
Having said that, I do think that the shops are useful for basic combining of stacks of ammos at early CLs and I sometimes use it for that. It's just not all it could conceivably become.
I can see it two ways: Leave it as it is, or allow improvements to greater plusses, at rapidly usurious rates. And/or perhaps allow the latter type of shop only in dungeon towns, or pass a quest to get access first.
But for me, I'm reasonably happy with it as it is.... except for the bolts thing

Yes, it's quantity about quality. I once shot down "The Destroyer" as an Archer using a bow. I bet it wasn't the damage all the arrows did but the weight of all arrows that spiked him which finally draged him down.

Hmm.... I stand corrected, thanks, didn't realize -- I guess it's because I haven't hit L50 with a ToME character yetNeil wrote:Maylith: When you're level 50 you can get +9,+9 from the ammo enchantment service. I've never seen something self-made that was higher than that.

Does the code *allow* for more than +9,+9?
