As the topic suggests, I'm unsure as to how stealth works in ToME. I always see a message saying that the mob 'briefly catches sight of me,' and yet my stealth is unbroken. The enemies still end up moving towards me and hitting me while I'm in stealth. How do I know when I'm stealthed and undetected?
Also, there is no real benefit to stealth until Shadowstrike at level 4, correct?

Explain Like I'm 5: Stealth

Stealth makes you sneaky. The mobs who catch a glimpse of you are not entirely sure on your location. They move towards the place they spotted you in.
At early levels the stealth doesn't work too well but later on it's fantastic.

Have you ever seen a Rogue or something blink in and out of visibility? That's what monsters see when you have Stealth on and they catch a glimpse of you. They will try to attack you but if they have spells they can be hilariously wrong and end up blasting their buddies full in the face.
Also, melee attacks made on a target that can't be seen due to stealth have something like a flat 2/3 miss chance before Defense/Accuracy is applied.

<Ferret> The Spellblaze was like a nuclear disaster apparently: ammo became the "real" currency.
