Need some help

#1 Post by Xandor Tik'Roth »

I have a project that I'm considering, and I'd like a few good users to help me with it. It has to do with the various character guides floating around on the forums. Not all of them are labelled like that, and there are a few threads that are, but the content is asking for a guide.

So what I want to do is have all of the character guides be stickied at the top of the respective character class part of the forum. The topic would also be closed. This is more to prevent clutter than anything else.

I really just need ideas on how to make this happen. Should I do it myself and just copy the guide into a new thread? Or should I get in contact with the individuals who created the guides and ask them to do it? This would give them the chance to change any formatting and update the guide to the newest version.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Feel free to reply here or shoot me a PM if you want to talk privately.
And it was such a good idea...

IMO, the best choice would be a sticky with the links to the existing (proved as good or whatever) guides WITHOUT closing them so that people could ask authors about something.

I would say sticky a new thread, put all the relevant links in the first post, and leave it open for discussion. As long as the first post is kept up to date the conversation won't clutter anything IMO.

I don't think there would be any reason to rewrite everything when these guides already exist. What we really need is a central place to let new players (myself included) get to them. This is really the only thing missing in the ToME community IMHO. There is such a lack of tutorial information both for playing and for modding. Love the game though... :D

I'm with anp. You could create a single sticky that lists/links whatever guides exist with version numbers appended. Then the authors could update the guides and discuss in the associated threads as normal, and users would get an idea of how recent/relevant the guide is without having to dig through the forum. You'd just need a single post for each forum.

There's another issue though, some of the guides are badly outdated, and could use an overhaul. Sticking some outdated information could create more problems then it solves.

I'm with Crim on this one. It's why I originally created this thread. Some of these guides go back into the Beta's for information, and I think we all know how much things have changed since then. So far as I'm aware, there are no guides available for the most current version (1.1.5 right now). The latest one I think is a Rogue guide from 1.0.5.

This is why I was thinking of contacting the guide authors to have them update their guides if they want them featured. I do like the idea of having one post with all of the available guides listed as links. The only downside to this approach is where to put that post? There's 10 class forums. I can't do a global post because that will show up in every one of the forums.

@vaughner: Yes, we know that there's not a ton of helpful information for new players, however, we do have a couple of people working on the wiki. We're cleaning it up first and then going to be adding new content. If you would like to help, we'd be grateful.
And it was such a good idea...

It's also worth mentioning that the ingame chat feature is remarkably helpful for newbie questions. You can almost always get help there.

I was looking at helping with the Wiki yesterday myself. The 'problem' that I had was there was no guidelines for editing that I could find anywhere. Af few details using 'crayons' in the main page discussion but that's all. I've always been apprehensive about editing wiki's when I don't know what is needed/wanted for fear of making a mess out of things. :/

Thanks Crim, I always forget about the in game chat to be totally honest. I see it there but tend to avoid it as it just always seems to be spamming achievements and deaths. I will have to give it a shot... :D

There are 3 great beginner guides on the Steam Workshop by SageAcrin. Might be worth getting his permission to C&P them over to the forums. http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/7656 ... pid=259680

You want that topic. Has a running discussion of who's involved and what they're doing with the wiki.

If that's what's keeping you away, won't you be happy to know you can selectively disable types of notifications!
Tuning out everything but the chat is actually very simple. One of the tabs in the game options... "In game chat" or something. :)

Yeah, I found that this afternoon while digging around in the options. Much quieter now. :D 8)
