Nightmare made easy for dummies

#1 Post by Faeryan »

I was gonna try and win on nightmare mode after a few failed attempts.

Basically what I'm trying to do is a Wil/Cun build with following trees:

Solipsism for defense
Finer energy manipulation for damage bonuses
Mindstar mastery for whacking
Gloom for nasty effects
Rampage for POWAH!
Absorption for shields
Thought forms for added distraction
Fungus for healing

And the trees I'm going to take with no spent category points:
Antimagic for shields
Harmony for curing nasty poisons

Any thoughts on the build? Should I get rid of something to raise mastery on other trees for bigger oooomph?

Race choice would most likely be Cornac.

Tried a few of these chars and died horribly. The best try I got was the fortress but I didn't dare to take anything from there as I had lost loads of lives.
Ended up doing normal roguelike mode and the character now at lv 35 is an absolute powerhouse.

If only it weren't the horrible purples on nightmare i would've enjoyed it a lot. Bosses were challenging and regulars not just pushovers, but the damned purples..

Char looks a lit like the build up there but no harmony yet. Doing some thick skin and armor training instead.

Here's the actual character I did. Normal Roguelike as mentioned above.

It looks like a pretty good build to me? What are you dying to?

I'd say take Ooze over Thoughtforms. In addition to summons, you get 40% resist all, and ignore crit. The crit thing is huge, because the biggest danger in Nightmare mode is suddenly dying from full health in one powerful hit, and being able to ignore crits gives you a whole lot more room to survive any unlucky rolls. And with Tome being a pretty long game, there will be a lot of unlucky rolls.

Also Nightmare hates melees, so while that's a great endgame build, if you're dying to the early game then you might want to go for a ranged build instead. Meta/Light/Aegis is an unbreakable combo for Magic builds.

I didn't want to touch any Oozemancer stuff, for them being a bit OP to say the least.
What killed me was pretty much a boredom. I entered an orc vault in ID 80+ when I saw it was full of orcs. Could've waited at the entrance but ID bored me so I kinda waited for death.

After Ata I juggled 4 class points away from skills to open Sand worm aspect and Burrow to enter Angolwen. Turned out I should have first done the apprentice mage and then went AM to be able to burrow to Angolwen.

Oh, mostly purples. Regular mobs are rather easy and bosses are mighty fun, but just because I know when and where to encounter them but sudden rares here and there prove a fast death for me.
My best weapon against them so far has been the though formed warrior while staying in hiding myself.

Another attempt at NM mode, with slightly similar char, more of a ranged one this time.
Cursed / Force of Will gives me low range hit with knockback to pair with Mindlash and Deflection ain't half bad defense tool either.

Might let Rampage and/or Gloom go as well as Finer energy manipulation and go with Preternatural senses for detection. Means I need Augmentation tree since I don't wanna raise STR.
