Question re: Elemental Surge prodigy

Does the Elemental Surge prodigy trigger only when the elemental damage itself is over the threshold? Or will it trigger on crits when total damage (say physical damage from a weapon) is over the threshold with a bit of the element thrown in?

The former.

You want damage conversion on a weapon ("26% of damage converted to Fire") rather than bonus damage "+6 Fire on hit(melee)". Then the crit will may get converted into an appropriate amount of elemental damage.

I suppose that -should- have been pretty obvious. As the latter would have been completely insane, given how easy it is to add a few points of five different damage types at once.
